María de Buenos Aires is a theatrical/musical show — the first in the tango-opera genre by Astor Piazzolla — with a libretto by Horacio Ferrer, an Uruguayan-Argentine poet who also wrote poems for several of Piazzolla's tangos.

The plot, complex and with surrealist touches, develops over 17 paintings, alternating between sung, recited or exclusively instrumental sections, where we follow María's life, death, resurrection and motherhood. The protagonist wanders between typical characters and everyday scenes in the Argentine capital, coming across a narrator poet who is also a duende, several puppets under her control, and a circus of psychoanalysts.

María and her shadow are the representation of Buenos Aires, associated with tango, street life and nightlife. But the character contains multiple readings and is often associated with both the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, as well as the female condition.

The work premiered at Sala Planeta in Buenos Aires, on May 8, 1968. The composer himself classified it as an «Operita», which we can consider «Chamber», and it is performed with an effective eleven instrumentalists, two solo singers ( a soprano and a baritone), a reciter and a small format choir group (with 4 to 6 elements) also reciter.
