14 Jahre war Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart erst alt, als er den Auftrag erhielt, für das Mailänder Teatro Regio Ducale eine große, abendfüllende Opera seria zu komponieren, »Mitridate, Re di Ponto«. Viele bedeutende Komponisten hatten zuvor Werke für diese europaweit angesehene Bühne geschaffen. Mozart reihte sich hier mit einer bemerkenswerten Oper ein, basierend auf einem Drama des französischen Tragödiendichters Jean Racine.

Die Geschichte um einen im Niedergang begriffenen König und Kriegsherr, dessen zwei so unterschiedliche Söhne dieselbe Frau lieben, die aber zugleich
seine eigene Braut ist, inspirierte Mozart zu einer Musik, die gehobenes Pathos und starke Leidenschaften ebenso kennt wie tiefempfundene Emotionen. Er schöpfte aus der Tradition und zeigte sich doch bereits auf einer Höhe, die Kommendes mehr als nur ahnen ließ. Die Uraufführung Ende 1770 wurde zum Triumph für den jugendlichen Komponisten. Ein japanisches Inszenierungsteam um den Regisseur Satoshi Miyagi taucht Mozarts »Mitridate« in ein zauberhaftes Ambiente und lässt verschiedene Welten aufeinandertreffen.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was only 14 years old when he was commissioned to compose a large, full-length opera seria, »Mitridate, Re di Ponto«, for the Teatro Regio Ducale in Milan. Many significant composers had previously created works for this opera house, which enjoyed a high reputation throughout Europe. Mozart joined their ranks with a remarkable opera based on a play by Jean Racine, the French dramatist of tragedies.

The story of a declining king and warlord, whose two very different sons are in love with the same woman – who also happens to be the father’s bride – inspired Mozart to create a music of great pathos, strong passions and profound emotions. While he drew on tradition, the score already showed a musical calibre that more than hinted at what was to come. The world premiere in late 1770 was a triumph for the young composer. A Japanese production team led by director Satoshi Miyagi suffuses Mozart’s »Mitridate« with a magical ambience and brings different worlds together.
