Verdi connaît avec cet opéra son premier grand succès, un triomphe même, à la Scala de Milan en 1842. Il a 29 ans et devient le compositeur le plus célèbre d'Italie. L'œuvre, elle, considérée comme un opéra patriotique, finira par résonner de concert avec le Risorgimento, le mouvement de libération qui conduira à l'unité italienne. Le chœur des esclaves « Va, Pensiero » deviendra un symbole de l'oppression des Italiens, qui en feront un hymne.
