Opera Aperta 2022: MACBETH: Macbeth Verdi

The first of Giuseppe Verdi's three operas based on Shakespeare's plays - which precedes Otello and Falstaff - , Macbeth presents a story of power, political intrigue and magic, with the protagonist couple - Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth. Throughout his life, Verdi was passionate about politics, composing Macbeth at a tense time in Italian history, when most of the peninsula was under Austrian rule. Verdi was sympathetic to the Unification of Italy, or Risorgimento ( it. " movement for unification and independence"), and the opera Macbeth reflects these affinities. The premiere took place at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence on March 14, 1847, with a revised version of the work being presented on April 21, 1865, at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris.

The Macbeth is mainly represented by the theme of tyranny, freedom and magic, the place of action being Scotland of the 11th century. The foreshadowing of the group of witches sets the protagonist couple on a path involving madness, murder and destruction. Driven by the prophecies of the witches and driven by unquenchable ambition, Macbeth and his wife, an archetypal power couple, commit murders consistently to keep the throne of Scotland. In Macbeth , the word "blood" is mentioned 24 times and the word "bloody" 15 times. Every moment of the work oscillates, on a knife's edge, between reality and hallucination, world and hell. From the foreboding first notes of the overture, to the earth-shaking arias, the macabre choruses of witches, criminals and Scots showing their turmoil, Verdi's music draws us powerfully into the heart of evil. Macbeth is an opera of chilling beauty, for which Giuseppe Verdi extracted the essence of magic, crime and madness from Shakespeare's play, giving it more intensity, which translates into an exploration of tyranny and a surprising journey of the disintegration of the soul . The honesty of the text, the transparency of the characters and the thriller-tinged aspect of the action make it both thrilling and delightful.

While the highlighting of tyranny in Verdi's work is an innovative element, the intrinsic connection between Macbeth and Shakespeare's play is revealed through the exploration of questions of fate and freedom: are Macbeth and Lady Macbeth pawns of evil spirits? Do they make belief in the supernatural an excuse for their thirst for power? Like Shakespeare, Verdi  kept the answers to these questions a mystery.

Prima dintre cele trei opere ale lui Giuseppe Verdi având la bază piesele de teatru ale lui Shakespeare – care precede Otello și Falstaff – , Macbeth prezintă o poveste despre putere, intrigă politică și magie, în centrul desfășurării acțiunii aflându-se cuplul protagonist – Macbeth și soția sa, Lady Macbeth. Pe parcursul vieții, Verdi a fost pasionat de politică, compunând opera Macbeth într-un moment tensionat din istoria Italiei, când cea mai mare parte a peninsulei era sub dominație austriacă. Verdi era simpatizant al Unificării Italiei, sau Risorgimento (it. „mișcarea pentru unificare și independență”), iar opera Macbeth reflectă aceste afinități. Premiera a avut loc la Teatro della Pergola din Florența, în data de 14 martie 1847, o versiune revizuită a operei fiind prezentată în 21 aprilie 1865, la Théâtre Lyrique din Paris. 

Opera Macbeth este reprezentată, în principal, de tema tiraniei, libertății și a magiei, locul desfășurării acțiunii fiind Scoția secolului XI. Prevestirea grupului de vrăjitoare stabilește cuplul protagonist pe un traseu ce implică nebunie, crimă și distrugere. Aflându-se sub impulsul profețiilor vrăjitoarelor și determinați fiind de o ambiție de necurmat, Macbeth și soția sa, un cuplu arhetipal al puterii, fac crime în mod consecvent pentru a păstra tronul Scoției. În Macbeth, cuvântul „sânge” este menționat de 24 de ori, iar cuvântul „sângeros” de 15 ori. Fiecare moment al operei oscilează, pe muchie de cuțit, între realitate și halucinație, lume și iad. De la primele note prevestitoare ale uverturii, până la ariile cutremurătoare, corurile macabre ale vrăjitoarelor, criminalilor și scoțienilor care-și manifestă frământările, muzica lui Verdi ne atrage puternic în inima maleficului. Macbeth este o operă de o frumusețe înfiorătoare, pentru care Giuseppe Verdi a extras din piesa lui Shakespeare esența de magie, crimă și nebunie, conferindu-i mai multă intensitate, ce se traduce printr-o explorare a tiraniei și o călătorie surprinzătoare a dezintegrării sufletului. Sinceritatea textului, transparența personajelor și aspectul cu nuanțe de thriller al desfășurării acțiunii o face palpitantă și încântătoare, deopotrivă.

În timp ce evidențierea tiraniei în opera lui Verdi reprezintă un element inovator, legătura intrinsecă dintre Macbeth și piesa lui Shakespeare se relevă prin explorarea întrebărilor despre soartă și libertate: sunt Macbeth și Lady Macbeth pioni ai spiritelor malefice? Fac ei din credința în supranatural o scuză pentru setea lor de putere? Ca și Shakespeare, Verdi a păstrat misterul răspunsurilor acestor întrebări.
