Playing with an organ is nothing new to the Orchestre National de Lyon: their auditorium boasts the kingly instrument built by Cavaillé-Coll for the 1878 World's Fair. Works such as Poulenc's Organ Concerto and the requiems of Duruflé and Fauré were created on the same organ when it was at the Palais de Chaillot.

Jouer avec orgue, les musiciens de l’Orchestre National de Lyon en ont l’habitude : dans leur auditorium trône l’instrument construit par Cavaillé-Coll pour l’Exposition Universelle de 1878, sur lequel ont été créées (alors qu’il était au Palais de Chaillot) le Concerto pour orgue de Poulenc ou les requiems de Duruflé et Fauré.

Un temps délaissé, l’orgue lyonnais a repris du service à l’occasion de la résidence de Thierry Escaich, de 2007 à 2010. Co-titulaire des orgues de Saint-Étienne-du-Mont (avec Escaich justement), Vincent Warnier, l’un des plus grands organistes français actuels, est un familier des Lyonnais depuis plusieurs années déjà. Grand interprète de Bach – plusieurs enregistrements en attestent –, ce musicien qui conjugue rigueur et sensibilité interprète la Passacaille et fugue en ut mineur du cantor transcrite par Respighi, mais aussi la Symphonie pour orgue et orchestre de Copland, le solo Volumina de Ligeti et Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra de Strauss – le tout sous la direction inspirée de Leonard Slatkin, à la tête de l’orchestre depuis 2011.
