The myth of Orpheus is, above all, the translation into symbolic language of the mourning after the death of a loved one: denial, negotiation and acceptance find their way of expression through the useless claim of the protagonist to rescue Eurydice. of the kingdom of Hades and his failed pact with the divinities of the underworld. Jean Cocteau -author of the film script that inspired this opera– directed his film Orphée (1950) after losing his lover –Raymond Radiguet– at just 20 years old. The exploration of him of the myth of him –in which nods to Orpheus lacking– is articulated as "the successive deaths that a poet must go through before becoming himself".

The death of his partner – designer and multimedia artist Candy Jernigan – also prompted Philip Glass to undertake this double homage with what would become the first title in a trilogy of chamber operas based on Cocteau – the others being La Belle et la Bête and Les Enfants terribles – totally independent of each other. Released in 1993, it turns the death of the young poet Cégeste into the starting point and return point of a particular descent into hell.

El mito de Orfeo es, ante todo, la traducción al lenguaje simbólico del duelo posterior a la muerte de un ser querido: la negación, la negociación y la aceptación encuentran su vía de expresión a través de la inútil pretensión del protagonista de rescatar a Eurídice del reino del Hades y de su fallido pacto con las divinidades del inframundo. Jean Cocteau -autor del guion cinematográfico que sirve de inspiración a esta ópera– dirigió su película Orphée (1950) tras haber perdido a su amante –Raymond Radiguet– con solo 20 años. Su exploración del mito –en la que no faltan guiños al Orfeo de Gluck– se articula como «las sucesivas muertes que debe atravesar un poeta antes de llegar a transformarse en sí mismo».

La muerte de su compañera –la diseñadora y artista multimedia Candy Jernigan– instó también a Philip Glass a emprender este doble homenaje con el que se convertiría en el primer título de una trilogía de óperas de cámara basadas en Cocteau –las otras son La Belle et la Bête y Les Enfants terribles–, totalmente independientes entre sí. Estrenada en 1993, convierte la muerte del joven poeta Cégeste en el punto de partida y de retorno de un particular descenso a los infiernos.
