Knapp 13 Jahre schrieb Giuseppe Verdi keine neue Oper mehr, bis er sich nach seinem Macbeth noch einmal einem Stoff von William Shakespeare zuwandte – dem Eifersuchtsdrama Otello, das unter seiner Feder zu einem der erschütterndsten Dramen des gesamten Opernrepertoires geriet.

Die aufgepeitschten Meeresstürme der Anfangsszene verlagern sich im Laufe der Oper allmählich ins Seeleninnere der Figuren. Wie Gift dringen die missgünstigen Einflüsterungen des Zynikers Jagos in die Ohren des venezianischen, schwarzen Feldherrns Otellos ein, der, siegreich aus einer Schlacht zurückgekehrt, auf der Höhe seines Ruhmes steht. Am Ende ist Otello von der Untreue seiner Ehefrau Desdemona überzeugt und tötet sie – seinen Irrtum erkennt er zu spät. «Kein Erbarmen mit Otello» ist allerdings das überraschende Motto der Inszenierung von Graham Vick. Der britische Regisseur zeigt ihn als Wüstenkrieger von heute, der in seiner neuen Welt nicht wirklich angekommen ist. Als unberechenbarer Despot ist er als Schwarzer und Moslem auf der Suche nach der eigenen Identität.

Nur wenige Tenöre beherrschen heutzutage die horrend schwierige Partie des Otello; dazu gehört der Lette Aleksandrs Antonenko, den wir erneut für die diesjährige Wiederaufnahme engagieren konnten. Guanqun Yu, die in Zürich zuletzt als Liù in Puccinis Turandot für Furore gesorgt hat, singt die Desdemona; als Jago stellt sich mit dem Spanier Juan Jesús Rodríguez einer der wichtigsten Verdi-Baritone unserer Zeit vor. Ausgewiesener Kenner dieses Repertoires ist auch der italienische Dirigent Daniele Rustioni, der am Pult der Philharmonia Zürich steht.

Giuseppe Verdi did not write a new opera for almost 13 years, until after his Macbeth he returned to a subject by William Shakespeare - the jealousy drama Otello , which under his pen became one of the most harrowing dramas in the entire operatic repertoire.

The whipped-up sea storms of the opening scene gradually shift into the souls of the characters in the course of the opera. The envious whisperings of the cynic Jagos penetrate like poison into the ears of the Venetian, black general Otellos, who, having returned victorious from a battle, is at the height of his fame. In the end, Otello is convinced that his wife Desdemona is unfaithful and kills her – he realizes his mistake too late. "No mercy on Otello" is the surprising motto of Graham Vick's production. The British director shows him as a modern-day desert warrior who hasn't really settled into his new world. As an unpredictable despot, he is black and a Muslim in search of his own identity.

Few tenors can master the terribly difficult part of Otello these days; this includes the Latvian Aleksandrs Antonenko, whom we were able to engage again for this year's revival. Guanqun Yu, who last caused a sensation in Zurich as Liù in Puccini's Turandot , sings Desdemona; the Spaniard Juan Jesús Rodríguez, one of the most important Verdi baritones of our time, is introduced as Jago. The Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni, who conducts the Zurich Philharmonia, is also a recognized expert on this repertoire.
