Britten's first major work, inaugurated in 1945, tells the story of a fisherman living in the Borgo, a coastal village in Suffolk. Peter Grimes is a tragic character: he aspires to improve himself but he is brutal, he often scapegoats the slanderers and loses his life at sea amid the indifference of the villagers. Even though he appears to be involved in the deaths of two young apprentices, we will never know if he was a killer, an inhuman boss or just a victim of an obsession with money. With lush symphonic pages, powerful choruses and stunning solo arias, Britten's music evokes complex visions of the majesty of nature and the dryness of human relationships.

La prima opera maggiore di Britten, inaugurata nel 1945, racconta la storia di un pescatore abitante al Borgo, un villaggio costiero del Suffolk. Peter Grimes è un personaggio tragico: aspira a migliorarsi ma è brutale, fa sovente da capro espiatorio ai maldicenti e perde la vita in mare tra l’indifferenza degli abitanti del villaggio.
