A story published in 1834 by A.S. Pushkin's "The Queen of Spades" half a century later found a new life on the opera stage. The librettist Modest Tchaikovsky, taking a literary work as a basis, changed the storyline, used the means of mystification, and expanded the scope of the protagonist's personal tragedy. The opera The Queen of Spades, created with inspiration by Tchaikovsky in 44 days, was first performed in St. Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theater on December 19, 1890. On the stage of the Stalin (Donetsk) State Russian Opera and Ballet Theater, the premiere of The Queen of Spades took place for the first time in December 1945.
