The Queen of Spades is the most perfect of P.I. Tchaikovsky, a masterpiece of Russian and world classics. This musical tragedy staggers with the psychological veracity of the reproduction of the thoughts and feelings of the heroes, their hopes, suffering and death, the intensity of the musical and dramatic development. The forces of fate, dominating man and destroying him, clashed here in a decisive duel with the forces of love and light. In the embodiment of dark and ominous images, Tchaikovsky reached heights that world music does not know, but the bright beginning of love is embodied here with the same power. In terms of purity and penetration, spirituality of the lyrics, The Queen of Spades is unsurpassed.

The libretto of the opera is based on the story of the same name by A.S. Pushkin. But the time of action in Tchaikovsky was transferred to the era of Catherine II, the image of the protagonist, the cynic and egoist Herman, acquired romantic features. In Yuri Alexandrov's production, Herman appears as the archetype of a Russian hero, a sufferer who sows death around him. He loves and is loved, but darkness consumes him...
