A Parisian courtesan sacrifices her one hope of personal happiness for the sake of her lover.

Dumas’ novel The Lady of the Camellias took Verdi’s breath away. He knew the location well – Paris, a city full of bustle, had never been his favourite and this tragic tale reminded him also of his own experience. In 1847 after some time he met again with his friend and the interpreter of his early works, the soprano Giuseppina Strepponi. They became close and their deep bond lasted until the end of her life. For years they cohabited and Verdi experienced for himself society’s opposition to “illegal” relationships. They were forced to live in seclusion in his manor at Sant’ Agata. His personal experience undoubtedly intensified his understanding and sympathy for the heroine, which permeates the whole opera… Probably none of those attending the Venetian premiere, which was a destructive fiasco, could have believed that they had witnessed the birth of one of the most popular and most performed Italian operas. Verdi always sought for his operas works with a dramatic plot and special characters and these were certainly present in Dumas’ work. Clear and moving lyrical music, which in Italian bel canto closely combined with dramatic expression, led to the creation of a timeless opera. The classical production offers a remarkable perspective on the life of a woman on the edges of society.

Von Dumas‘ Roman Die Kameliendame war Verdi begeistert. Gut kannte er den Ort der Handlung – Paris, eine Stadt voller Hektik, die er nicht gerade liebte –, und die tragische Geschichte erinnerte ihn an seine eigene Lebenserfahrung: 1847 traf er nach langer Zeit eine alte Freundin und Interpretin seiner frühen Werke, die Sopranistin Giuseppina Strepponi. Sie kamen einander näher, und ihre tiefe Beziehung dauerte bis zum Tod der Sängerin. Mehrere Jahre lang lebten sie in einer wilden Ehe, und Verdi erlebte am eigenen Leib den Groll der Gesellschaft gegen ihre „illegale“ Beziehung. Sie wurden gezwungen, sich in die Abgeschiedenheit von Verdis Anwesen in Sant Agata zurückzuziehen. Diese persönlichen Erfahrungen verstärkten zweifellos Verdis Verständnis und Sympathie für die Hauptfigur, welche die gesamte La traviata durchdringen… Wohl keiner der Teilnehmer der venezianischen Uraufführung, die ein verheerendes Fiasko war, glaubte, dass er gerade die Geburt einer der beliebtesten und meistgespielten italienischen Opern erlebt hatte. Verdi suchte für seine Opern stets Vorlagen mit einer dramatischen Handlung und seltsamen Charakteren, und in Dumas’ Kunstwerk fand er zweifellos beides. Die klare und ergreifende lyrische Musik, die den italienischen Belcanto eng mit einem dramatischen Ausdruck kombiniert, ließ ein Evergreen der Opernwelt entstehen. Zbyněk Srbas klassische Inszenierung bietet einen bemerkenswerten Einblick in das Leben der Frauen am Rande der Gesellschaft.

Snad nikdo z účastníků benátské premiéry, která byla zničujícím fias­kem, nevěřil, že se právě stal svědkem zrodu jedné z nejoblíbenějších a nejhranějších italských oper. Verdi v románu o lásce kurtizány Violetty a Alfréda, které nepřeje jeho otec ani společnost, nalezl téma mu blízké. Znal dobře místo děje – Paříž, město plné shonu, nikdy neměl příliš v oblibě a tragický příběh mu připomněl i jeho životní zkušenost. Léta žil ve volném svazku se sopranistkou Giuseppinou Strepponi a na vlastní kůži pocítil odpor společnosti vůči „nelegálnímu“ vztahu. Jeho osobní prožitek bezpochyby umocnil pochopení a soucit s hlavní hrdinkou, které celou operou prostupují… Průzračná lyrická hudba, kde se italské bel canto úzce snoubí s dramatickým výrazem, dodala tragickému příběhu lásky proslulé pařížské kurtizány na jíma­vosti a dala tak vzniknout opernímu evergreenu.
