Beethoven's song cycle “To the distant beloved” is considered the first song cycle in music history. The fact that Beethoven composed 90 songs in addition to his symphonies and piano works has almost been forgotten today. As a song composer, Beethoven was always overshadowed by his contemporary Franz Schubert, who, as the prince of the art song, shaped the history of this supreme discipline of song with his 600 songs.
The program "From Beethoven to Bernstein" embarks on a varied journey through the history of the art song in the footsteps of important German, French and American composers. Soloists from the opera ensemble are accompanied on the piano by Lutz Rademacher, Hye-Ryung Lee and others.
Music by Beethoven, Bernstein, Crumb, Duparc, Ibert, Mahler, Schönberg, Schubert.
