The meeting of two universes
A masterpiece of darkness taken from a censored and unsuccessful play by Victor Hugo, The King amuses himself , in which Verdi has changed the characters to escape censorship, Rigoletto triumphs at La Fenice de Venice in 1851. A work of permanent tension which continues to deepen the furrows of the Verdian themes of family secrecy and abusive power, this is the first part of a trilogy extended by Le Trouvère and La Traviata. The composer, always quick to put a voice forward, here puts the baritone in the tortured role of the jester Rigoletto, condensed from the contradictions of the human condition. The staging is entrusted to the Berlin director and filmmaker Axel Ranisch, who here for the first time confronts a work by Verdi with his quirky universe, imbued with melancholy burlesque, love of the circus and trash poetry. And transposes the intrigue of Rigoletto in a Berlin suburb of the 90s. The collision of these two artistic universes promises to make sparks. Even more under the breathtaking musical direction of vivacity and mastery of Daniele Rustioni, specialist of Verdi.
