On tour throughout Ireland in May 2015 Opera Theatre Company's Rigoletto is directed by Award Winning Selina Cartmell in a new translation by Marina Carr. Enjoy interviews from conductor Fergus Sheil, translator Marina Carr and soprano Emma Nash who sings Gilda. Rigoletto design is by Alex Lowde with lighting by Sinead Wallace. One of the greatest operas of all time, Verdi’s potent tale of lust, revenge and betrayal is set to absolutely sublime music and guarantees an unforgettable opera experience. This new Rigoletto production features a stellar cast led by powerful Northern Irish baritone Bruno Caproni, who is a regular performer on the world stage (Met Opera, ROH, ENO & WNO). Cork soprano Emma Nash plays his vulnerable young daughter Gilda, with mezzo Kate Allen as Maddelena. Brazilian tenor Luciano Botelho (WNO & ROH) plays the notorious seducer The Duke. John Molloy plays Sparafucile, Brendan Collins (Marullo), Doreen Curran (Giovanna) and Owen Gilhooly (Borsa). David Howes (Ceprano) and Michael Druiett (Monterone) round off the talented cast and the production also features dancers Sarah Ryan and Monica Marin plus a professional male chorus including Kevin Neville, Rory Musgrave, David Scott, Shokri Raoof, Peter O'Donohue, Paul O'Connor and David Lynn .

When a father’s love goes too far…. when his instinct to protect blinds him to the consequences…. when innocence meets debauchery…. the result is a potent cocktail of lust, power, revenge and betrayal, all distilled into a musical experience of unparalleled intensity. 

Critically acclaimed theatre director Selina Cartmell (winner Best Director Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards) dramatically reimagined the piece in a newly commissioned contemporary translation by Irish playwright Marina Carr, which transported this medieval tale into our time and our world.

Based on Victor Hugo’s play Le roi s’amuse, the tragic story revolves around the attempts of a desperate father Rigoletto and his efforts to protect Gilda his innocent daughter from the amorous attentions of his amoral boss The Duke.

Sung in English, Rigoletto was full of exquisite duets and instantly recognisable music– especially the famous tenor aria 'La donna è mobile' (All women are fickle).
