Dance courses through the veins of this program. American composer Adam Schoenberg writes music that sounds like a cross between Radiohead and Copland. His Picture Studies, a 21st-century version of Mussorgsky’s timeless Pictures at an Exhibition, brings disparate works of visual art to musical life, enhanced by choreography and dancers from The Big Muddy Dance Company. One of Stéphane’s favorite ballet scores, Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet captures the thrills and tragedy of a star-crossed love.

A few things to know:  

Kirven Douthit-Boyd returns to the SLSO after choreographing English composer Anna Clyne’s work DANCE to acclaim in 2021. Douthit-Boyd was recently appointed Artistic Director of The Big Muddy Dance Company. “The way I move dancers in space is always inspired by music,” he says. “Hearts will swell when everyone hears the orchestra and sees bodies in the space.”  

Adam Schoenberg’s music is popular with audiences. This Emmy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated composer writes music that responds to a sense of wonder, whether it is the feeling of his child bouncing on his lap, or looking up at the stars, or reading stories of his immigrant ancestors.

Stéphane’s passion for Prokofiev goes back to his childhood. “Prokofiev’s music gives me the feeling of being at home. The dramatic unity, breadth, richness, and melodies of Romeo and Juliet have made it one of his most famous works.”
