The world's most famous love story gets a different twist here when the plot is placed in the more shady parts of 19th century New York. Gounod's beautiful, romantic music stands in stark contrast to the dark, dangerous world where Roméo and Juliette meet their fate.

It's New Year's Eve 1889, on the verge of a new decade. In the heart of New York, the wealthy Capulet family has invited you to a spectacular circus party. Just this magical night, the daughter Juliette meets the love of her life Roméo. But Roméo belongs to the enemy family Montague, immigrants from Italy who fight with the Capulet family for power over the business on the shadow side of New York.

When the party is over, the dark, dangerous and suffocating reality invades. Roméo and Juliette do not have a chance when the conflict between their families flares up in a bloody gang war that ends in tragedy.

WANTED SUCCESS
The French 19th century composer Charles Gounod's version of Shakespeare's classic love story was a success right at the world premiere at the Théàtre Lyrique in Paris in 1867. Something he desperately needed after three times trying to write an opera that could live up to Faust's success a decade earlier.

Gounod had considered making an opera of Romeo and Juliet for a long time, and once he got started he put his whole soul into the work. He isolated himself in the small coastal town of Saint-Raphael in Provence to compose undisturbed. In one month he had a finished draft and a year later the whole opera was ready.

A curiosity is that Gounod dedicated his work to King Charles XV of Sweden.

FAST POPULAR
That the world premiere coincided with the World's Fair in Paris was a stroke of luck. The city abounded with visiting guests and dignities from near and far. The opera quickly became popular and soon spread around the world. The Swedish premiere took place at the Stockholm Opera within a year. In France, well into the 20th century, it was one of the Paris Opera's most popular repertoire elements and was performed for many years as the beginning of the season at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Gounod did not think his opera would be played in a special way. On the contrary, he believed that it could be adapted to different types of audience. And so it has survived until today, in many different forms adapted to which singers participate, which audience it is played for and how the director wants to perform the work.

BRITISH DIRECTOR
The director is British Amy Lane, who is the director of the Copenhagen Opera Festival and was previously deputy director at the Royal Opera in London. She has directed a number of productions mainly in the UK, but also around Europe as well as in the US and Australia. Most recently La bohème at the Norwegian Opera and Valkyrian at the Longborough Festival.

Men Roméo tillhör fiendefamiljen Montague, invandrare från Italien som fightas med familjen Capulet om makten över affärsverksamheten på New Yorks skuggsida.

När festen är slut tränger sig den mörka, farliga och kvävande verkligheten på. Roméo och Juliette har inte en chans när konflikten mellan deras familjer blossar upp i ett blodigt gängkrig som slutar i tragedi.

Efterlängtad succé
Den franska 1800-talstonsättaren Charles Gounods version av Shakespeares klassiska kärlekshistoria blev en succé direkt vid urpremiären på Théàtre Lyrique i Paris 1867. Något han desperat behövde efter att tre gånger ha försökt skriva en opera som kunde leva upp till framgången med Faust ett decennium tidigare.

Gounod hade övervägt att göra en opera av Romeo och Julia en längre tid och när han väl satte igång lade han hela sin själ i arbetet. Han isolerade sig i den lilla kuststaden Saint-Raphael i Provence för att komponera ostört. På en månad hade han ett färdigt utkast och ett år senare var hela operan klar.

En kuriositet är att Gounod tillägnade sitt verk Sveriges kung Karl XV.

Malmö Opera har framfört operan konsertant vid två tillfällen, Malmöfestivalen och Copenhagen Opera Festival. Oper! Magazine rescenserade: “Ringborg älskar de stora gesterna – breda, klara linjer, som når fram till kärnan genom detaljerna. I Proshina och Moon har han två starka huvudroller.“ 

Snabbt populär
Att urpremiären sammanföll med världsutställningen i Paris var ett lyckokast. Staden vimlade av tillresta gäster och digniteter från när och fjärran. Operan blev snabbt populär och spreds snart över världen. Den svenska premiären ägde rum på Stockholmsoperan inom ett år. I Frankrike var den långt in på 1900-talet ett av Parisoperans mest populära repertoarinslag och den uppfördes under många år som inledning av säsongen på Metropolitan Opera i New York.

Gounod tyckte inte att hans opera skulle spelas på ett speciellt sätt. Tvärtom menade han att den skulle kunna anpassas till olika typer av publik. Och så har den överlevt fram till idag, i många olika former anpassade efter vilka sångare som medverkar, vilken publik den spelas för och hur regissören vill framföra verket.

Brittisk regissör
Regissör är brittiska Amy Lane, som är konstnärlig ledare för Copenhagen Opera Festival och tidigare var chefsregissör på Royal Opera i London. Hon har regisserat en mängd uppsättningar i huvudsakligen Storbritannien, men även runt om i Europa samt i USA och Australien. Senast La bohème på Den Norske Opera och Valkyrian på Longborough-festivalen
