Zärtlich trägt sie den im See badenden Prinzen auf ihren Armen. Doch der junge Mann nimmt Rusalka nur als tanzende Wellen wahr. Sie ist eine Nixe und als Wasserwesen für die Menschen unsichtbar. Aber Rusalkas Herz ist für den Prinzen entflammt. Sie ist bereit, alles dafür zu geben, ein Mensch zu werden, damit sie ihre Liebe leben kann. Ihr Vater, der Wassermann, warnt sie vor den Menschen. Doch die junge Nixe geht zur Hexe Jezibaba und bittet sie darum, eine richtige Frau werden zu dürfen. Die Hexe macht aus Rusalkas Fischschwanz zwei Beine. Aber der Preis dafür ist hoch. Sie nimmt Rusalka die Stimme. Trotz ihrer Sprachlosigkeit muss es ihr gelingen, die bedingungslose Liebe des Prinzen zu erringen, sonst droht ewige Verdammnis. Auf der Jagd findet der Prinz die schöne, stumme Frau am Ufer des Sees, verliebt sich und heiratet sie. Aber die Stummheit und das seltsame Gebaren von Rusalka lösen Befremden in der Hofgesellschaft und auch beim Prinzen aus. Ihr Schweigen treibt ihn in die Arme einer fremden Fürstin, die den jungen Mann einfach nur aus Spaß verführt. Und Rusalka bricht es das Herz …

Schöner und schmerzerfüllter kann man Sehnsucht nicht zum Klingen bringen, als es Antonín Dvořák in seiner Oper »Rusalka« gelungen ist. Diese von leidenschaftlicher Romantik geprägte Musik bietet ein Abbild der aufgewühlten Psyche der jungen Frau. Der Komponist war hier auf dem Höhepunkt seiner kompositorischen Meisterschaft. Nicht umsonst nimmt Dvořáks 1900 entstandene Oper neben Smetanas »Die verkaufte Braut« einen hervorragenden Platz in der tschechischen Opernliteratur ein und zählt heute zu den viel gespielten Werken auf internationalen Bühnen. Das märchenhaft-lyrische Libretto vom Theaterprofi Jaroslav Kvapil, der Autor und Schauspielleiter am Prager Nationaltheater war, hatte den Komponisten sehr berührt. Es geht auf den slawischen Volksmythos über die Rusalky, die Wassergeister und Nixen, zurück. Rusalka hat außerdem viele Vorbilder in der Epoche der Romantik: »Die kleine Meerjungfrau« von Hans Christian Andersen oder Fouqués »Undine«, von E. T. A. Hoffmann für seine gleichnamige Zauberoper vertont. Dass dieser Stoff zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts so eine Renaissance erlebte, hing unter anderem mit der zunehmenden Entfremdung des Menschen von der Natur zusammen, die hier in der Unvereinbarkeit der zwei Welten von Naturwesen und menschlicher Zivilisation behandelt wird. Aber auch die aufkommende Psychoanalyse, die sich überhaupt erst mit dem weiblichem Gefühls- und Liebesleben beschäftigte, spielt eine Rolle. Beide Themen sind über das märchenhafte Sujet hinaus in dieser Oper vereint.

Tenderly she carries the prince bathing in the lake in her arms. But the young man only perceives Rusalka as dancing waves. She is a mermaid and, as a water creature, is invisible to humans. But Rusalka's heart is on fire for the prince. She is willing to give anything to become human so that she can live her love. Her father, Aquarius, warns her about humans. But the young mermaid goes to the witch Jezibaba and asks her to be allowed to become a real woman. The witch makes two legs out of Rusalka's fish tail. But the price for this is high. She takes Rusalka's vote. Despite her speechlessness, she must succeed in winning the prince's unconditional love, otherwise she faces eternal damnation. While hunting, the prince finds the beautiful, mute woman on the shore of the lake, falls in love and marries her. But Rusalka's muteness and strange demeanor caused astonishment in court society and also in the prince. Her silence drives him into the arms of a strange princess who seduces the young man just for fun. And it breaks Rusalka's heart...

You couldn't make longing sound more beautiful and painful than Antonín Dvořák did in his opera »Rusalka«. This music, marked by passionate romanticism, offers an image of the young woman's troubled psyche. Here the composer was at the peak of his compositional mastery. It is not for nothing that Dvořák's opera, written in 1900, occupies an excellent place in Czech opera literature alongside Smetana's »The Bartered Bride« and is today one of the most frequently performed works on international stages. The fairytale-like, lyrical libretto by the theater professional Jaroslav Kvapil, who was an author and director of drama at the National Theater in Prague, had touched the composer deeply. It goes back to the Slavic folk myth about the Rusalky, the water spirits and mermaids. Rusalka also has many role models from the Romantic era: »The Little Mermaid« by Hans Christian Andersen or Fouqué's »Undine«, set to music by ETA Hoffmann for his magic opera of the same name. The fact that this material experienced such a renaissance at the beginning of the 20th century was partly due to the increasing alienation of humans from nature, which is dealt with here in the incompatibility of the two worlds of natural beings and human civilization.
