With the dramatic oratorio Saul , which George Frideric Handel wrote in just a few weeks despite a deep psychological and financial crisis, after Semele, another of his oratorios, which are rarely performed in this country, can be experienced as a large scenic production - directed by the Berliner Opern- and film director Axel Ranisch.

After the shepherd David had killed the enemy Philistine commander, Goliath, with a stone's throw, he entered the Israelite court as a victorious hero. The rejoicing of the people is great - too great for the taste of King Saul, who was also enthusiastic at first. Torn between jealousy and bottomless melancholy, which only David playing the harp can alleviate, he soon does everything to get David out of the way. But Saul's son Jonathan is with David, as is his daughter Michal. When Saul's second daughter, Merab, finally confesses to David, the king decides to kill David. But the prophecy says: Saul's star will sink, but that of the house of David will rise.

From radiant triumphal choirs to the prophetic whispers of the ghostly witch of Endor to the dignified funeral march – Handel offers everything to do musical justice to the dramatic story of the torn ruler Saul. Based on Old Testament material, director Axel Ranisch describes the tragedy of a family in which the unexpected appearance of a young outsider shakes every foundation. Mit dem dramatischen Oratorium Saul, das Georg Friedrich Händel trotz einer tiefen psychi-schen und finanziellen Krise in wenigen Wochen zu Papier brachte, ist nach Semele ein weiteres seiner hierzulande selten aufgeführten Oratorien als große szenische Inszenierung zu erleben – in der Regie des Berliner Opern- und Filmregisseurs Axel Ranisch.

Nachdem der Hirte David den Heerführer der feindlichen Philister, Goliath, mit einem Steinwurf niedergestreckt hat, zieht er als siegreicher Held in den israelitischen Hof ein. Der Jubel des Volks ist groß – zu groß für den Geschmack des zunächst ebenfalls begeis-terten König Saul. Hin- und hergerissen zwischen Eifersucht und bodenloser Schwermut, die einzig Davids Harfenspiel lindern kann, setzt er dennoch bald alles daran, David aus dem Weg zu schaffen. Sauls Sohn Jonathan aber hält zu David, ebenso Tochter Michal. Als sich zuletzt auch Sauls zweite Tochter, Merab, zu David bekennt, beschließt der König Davids Tod. Die Prophezeiung aber sagt: Sauls Stern wird sinken, aufsteigen aber der des Hauses David.

Von strahlenden Triumphchören über das prophetische Wispern der gespenstischen Hexe von Endor bis zum würdevollen Trauermarsch – Händel bietet alles auf, um der dramatischen Geschichte des in sich zerrissenen Herrschers Saul musikalisch gerecht zu werden. Regisseur Axel Ranisch beschreibt im alttestamentarischen Stoff die Tragödie einer Familie, in der das unerwartete Auftreten eines jungen Außenseiters jede:n Grundfesten erschüttert. Der Trauermarsch für König Saul wird bis heute bei zahlreichen Staatsbegräbnissen gespielt. Würdig und erlösend zugleich.
