Melodies have the power to change lives or to mark time. Glinka sees in Ne iskushay menya bez nuzhdi the spark that launched her career thanks to word of mouth at salons. After the premiere of the opera A Life for the Tsar, the cycle Farewell to Saint Petersburg underscores his desire to get away from Russian shores at a time when his marriage is falling apart. Unhappy love did not prevent Tchaikovsky from heartily writing the Six French Melodies to Désirée Artôt, a Belgian mezzo-soprano who had promptly broken off their engagement nearly twenty years earlier. Borodin's melodies embrace several stages of his identity as a composer: the entertainment of his student years for those with cello and piano, and the later social satire (1881) for U lyudey to v domu.
