Il desiderio di esplorare con la musica il mondo letterario di Pirandello è nato per puro caso tanti anni fa. Tuttavia ho lasciato per lungo tempo che la cosa sedimentasse dentro di me. Poi, all’improvviso, sono venuti fuori tre atti unici, due dei quali vengono adesso posti all’attenzione del pubblico livornese.
“La patente” e “Lo sgombero” sono tra le novelle più conosciute di Pirandello, che ne fece anche una versione teatrale, quindi per la scelta del testo da musicare, mi sono servito appunto sia delle novelle che delle relative commedie.
L’organico strumentale originale prevede l’accompagnamento del solo pianoforte (anche se in seguito ho provveduto all’orchestrazione)
La ragione che mi ha spinto ad usare questo organico minimo è soprattutto quella della difficoltà, oggi più che mai forte, del reperimento dei fondi necessari alla messa in scena di spettacoli lirici, ma anche alla agilità che detto organico può dare: uno spettacolo come questo ha bisogno di pochi elementi scenici e di un pianoforte. Si può allestire in piccoli teatri dove lo strumento accompagnatore potrebbe trovare la sua collocazione addirittura sulla scena, ove non ci fosse lo spazio sottopalco. Ho pensato anche alla esecuzione nell’aula magna di qualche scuola superiore, dove i programmi prevedono lo studio di Pirandello all’ultimo anno di corso.
Per quanto riguarda il linguaggio, non sta a me dire quali siano le influenze riscontrabili nella musica che ho scritto, o se essa abbia o meno una sua originalità. Ad altri questo compito.
Penso però che a formare lo stile di un compositore concorrano diversi elementi: cultura, sensibilità, gusti, preferenze ed altro. Ogni cosa viene poi filtrata, ripensata, fatta propria, infine tradotta in musica con un procedimento non sempre cosciente.
Nel caso di Pirandello ho cercato di rendere giustizia alla parola, sottolineando in qualche modo gli stati d’animo dei personaggi e le diverse atmosfere, quasi che la musica fosse semplicemente una colonna sonora a commento del testo. Se sappiamo ascoltare Pirandello, la musica la sentiamo già nelle sue parole.

The desire to explore Pirandello's literary world with music was born by pure chance many years ago. However, I let it settle inside me for a long time. Then, suddenly, three one-act plays emerged, two of which are now being brought to the attention of the Livorno public.
"La patente" and "Lo sgombero" are among the best known short stories by Pirandello, who also made a theatrical version of them, so for the choice of the text to set to music, I used both the short stories and the relative comedies.
The original instrumental ensemble provides for the accompaniment of the piano alone (even if I later provided for the orchestration)
The reason that prompted me to use this minimum staff is above all that of the difficulty, today more than ever, of finding the funds necessary for the staging of opera performances, but also to the agility that said staff can give: a show like this it needs few scenery elements and a piano. It can be set up in small theaters where the accompanying instrument could even find its place on the stage, where there is no space under the stage. I also thought about the performance in the great hall of some high school, where the programs foresee the study of Pirandello in the last year of the course.
As for the language, it's not up to me to say what influences can be found in the music I've written, or whether or not it has its own originality. To others this task.
However, I think that various elements contribute to forming the style of a composer: culture, sensitivity, tastes, preferences and more. Everything is then filtered, rethought, made its own, finally translated into music with a process that is not always conscious.
In the case of Pirandello I have tried to do justice to the word, underlining in some way the moods of the characters and the different atmospheres, almost as if the music were simply a soundtrack commenting on the text. If we know how to listen to Pirandello, we can already hear the music in his words.
