Dedicata alla memoria della defunta madre, morta nel maggio del 1909, è la Berceuse élégiaque op. 42 che Busoni compose nel corso di quello stesso anno. Prevedibilmente, un’atmosfera funebre informa questo capolavoro sinfonico che, eseguito per la prima volta il 21 febbraio 1911 alla Carnegie Hall di New York sotto la direzione di Mahler, si distingue per una straordinaria ricerca timbrica che sceglie una tavolozza di colori opachi volti a trasmettere un sentimento di lutto, reso attraverso l’uso della sordina e degli armonici nella parte degli archi e attraverso un ritmo caratterizzato da una scrittura essenziale, che vuole comunicare all’ascoltatore il sentimento dell’eternità. L’armonia, ormai ai confini della tonalità grazie all’uso di quarte sovrapposte, testimonia invece la modernità di questo lavoro che ascoltiamo, in occasione di questo concerto, nell’arrangiamento per orchestra da camera realizzato da John Adams nel 1989, e da lui diretto per la prima volta l’8 giugno dello stesso anno presso la cattedrale di St. Paul a Londra.

La composizione della Sinfonia n. 9 che, intrapresa nel 1889, fu completata solo nei primi tre movimenti, coincise con gli ultimi anni di vita di Bruckner, segnati dalla solitudine e da un progressivo declino. La Sinfonia, eseguita postuma a Vienna l’11 febbraio 1903 sotto la direzione di Ferdinand Löwe, che aveva approntato una revisione dei primi tre movimenti, fu ripresa nella versione originale rivista questa volta da Robert Haas, sotto la direzione di Siegmund von Hausegger a Monaco il 2 aprile 1932.

Sin dai primi abbozzi risalenti al 1887, appare evidente l’intenzione di Bruckner di costruire, sul modello degli ultimi lavori di Schubert e di Beethoven, un grande lavoro sinfonico denso di significati e degno della dedica sincera Al Buon Dio.


Il primo movimento, Feierlich (Solenne), Misterioso, ha una struttura plurimotivica con il primo tema che, come accade spesso nei lavori sinfonici di Bruckner, nasce a poco a poco su un tremolo degli archi. Il secondo movimento (Scherzo) è un tragico Landler, mentre protagonisti dell’Adagio, ultimo movimento completato da Bruckner e autentico congedo dalla vita, sono ancora i violini che in apertura descrivono un arco melodico particolarmente ampio e frastagliato.

Questo movimento è in realtà un caleidoscopio delle possibilità tecniche ed espressive della scrittura di Bruckner con intense armonie che ricordano i cromatismi del Tristano, con squilli di trombe e con i corali di tube tipici dello stile del compositore austriaco.

Dedicated to the memory of his late mother, who died in May 1909, is the Berceuse élégiaque op. 42 that Busoni composed during that same year. Predictably, a funereal atmosphere informs this symphonic masterpiece which, performed for the first time on 21 February 1911 at Carnegie Hall in New York under the direction of Mahler, stands out for an extraordinary timbral research which chooses a palette of opaque colors aimed at conveying a feeling of mourning, expressed through the use of the mute and harmonics in the string part and through a rhythm characterized by essential writing, which wants to communicate the feeling of eternity to the listener. The harmony, now at the boundaries of tonality thanks to the use of overlapping fourths, instead testifies to the modernity of this work which we hear, on the occasion of this concert, in the arrangement for chamber orchestra created by John Adams in 1989, and by him conducted for the first time on 8 June of the same year at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

The composition of Symphony no. 9 which, undertaken in 1889, was completed only in the first three movements, coincided with the last years of Bruckner's life, marked by loneliness and a progressive decline. The Symphony , performed posthumously in Vienna on 11 February 1903 under the direction of Ferdinand Löwe, who had prepared a revision of the first three movements, was revived in the original revised version this time by Robert Haas, under the direction of Siegmund von Hausegger in Munich on April 2, 1932.

From the first drafts dating back to 1887, Bruckner's intention to build, on the model of the last works of Schubert and Beethoven, a great symphonic work full of meaning and worthy of the sincere dedication to the Good God is evident .


The first movement, Feierlich (Solenne), Misterioso , has a plurimotivic structure with the first theme which, as often happens in Bruckner's symphonic works, arises little by little on a string tremolo. The second movement ( Scherzo ) is a tragic Landler , while the protagonists of the Adagio , the last movement completed by Bruckner and an authentic farewell to life, are again the violins which at the opening describe a particularly broad and jagged melodic arc.

This movement is actually a kaleidoscope of the technical and expressive possibilities of Bruckner's writing with intense harmonies that recall the chromaticisms of Tristan , with trumpet blasts and tuba chorales typical of the Austrian composer's style.
