For its first concert at the Elbphilharmonie, the venerable Staatskapelle Berlin under its star conductor Daniel Barenboim plays two works that still belong to the 19th-century Romantic repertoire, but already point the way to the future.

On the one hand, the programme features the Prelude and »Liebestod« from Richard Wagner’s opera »Tristan und Isolde«: a piece of music that shocked audiences and critics alike in its day. Why? This is where people heard the infamous »Tristan chord« for the first time, an ambiguous phrase full of tension that no composer had ever written down in this form hitherto. Wagner broke a taboo here, not only calling the conventional theory of music into question in the years that followed, but even triggering a full-blown crisis in the world of Romantic harmonics.

The other work in this evening’s concert is the forward-looking Ninth Symphony by Anton Bruckner, himself a great admirer of Wagner’s. With this last symphony, which remained incomplete, Bruckner reached for the stars, and even planned to dedicate it to »our dear Lord«. Shortly before his death in 1896, he composed in a style that was more extreme and revolutionary than ever: dissonant, abrupt and on the brink of despair. With the Ninth, Bruckner threw the door to the 20th century wide open and paved the way for his younger colleagues Gustav Mahler and Arnold Schoenberg.

Bei ihrem ersten Konzert in der Elbphilharmonie wird die traditionsreiche Staatskapelle Berlin mit ihrem Stardirigenten Daniel Barenboim zwei Werke zu Gehör bringen, die zwar noch zur Romantik des 19. Jahrhunderts zählen, jedoch schon weit darüber hinaus weisen.

Zum einen steht mit Vorspiel und Liebestod aus Richard Wagners Oper »Tristan und Isolde« ein Stück Musik auf dem Programm, das damals Publikum wie Kenner zutiefst schockierte. Denn hier erklang erstmals der berühmt-berüchtigte »Tristan-Akkord«, ein spannungsvolles mehrdeutiges Klanggebilde, das so noch nie zuvor notiert worden war. Der Akkord kam einem Tabubruch gleich und sollte in den Folgejahren nicht nur die herkömmliche Musiklehre in Frage stellen, sondern gar eine regelrechte Krise der romantischen Harmonik einläuten.

Zum anderen wird in an diesem Konzertabend die zukunftsweisende 9. Sinfonie von Anton Bruckner erklingen, einem großen Verehrer Richard Wagners. Mit dieser letzten, unvollendet gebliebenen Sinfonie griff Bruckner tonkünstlerisch nach den Sternen, wollte sie gar »dem lieben Gott« widmen. Kurz vor seinem Tod im Jahr 1896 komponierte er in einer Sprache, die revolutionärer und extremer war als je zuvor: dissonant, schroff und beinahe verzweifelt. Damit stieß Bruckner das Tor ins 20. Jahrhundert weit auf und ebnete den Weg für seine jüngeren Kollegen Gustav Mahler und Arnold Schönberg.
