Dvořák's first sacred work with soloists and choir of the Opera Carlo Felice Genova directed by Claudio Marino Moretti invites you to meditate.
The  Stabat Mater  opens the chapter of Dvořák's sacred music, which will culminate in the masterpieces of  Requiem  and  Te Deum. The score, which began in February 1876 following the loss of his daughter Josefa, was carried out by Dvorak with unusual slowness, while fate continued to reserve new devastating tests for the composer, with the subsequent death of his eldest daughter and another son, of four years. The first version, from 1876, for solos, choir and piano will be followed by the completion of the orchestral version in 1877. The cantata consists of ten numbers, of which only the first and last are thematically interconnected, with the resumption of the initial themes, in major way, in the sumptuous final fugue. The score was completed in Prague on November 13, 1877, and the first performance took place only three years later, on December 23, 1880, on behalf of the Prague Music Artists Association, to which Dvořák dedicated the composition. A year and a half later, the opera had two other performances in Prague, and one in Budapest. In March 1884, under the direction of the author, lo Stabat  achieved a great success at the Royal Albert Hall in London, with a group of 800 choristers, followed by numerous other European performances.

Lo Stabat Mater apre il capitolo della musica sacra di Dvořák, che culminerà nei capolavori del Requiem e del Te Deum. La partitura, iniziata nel febbraio 1876 a seguito della perdita della figlia Josefa, fu portata avanti da Dvorak con inconsueta lentezza, mentre il destino continuava a riservare nuove devastanti prove al compositore, con la successiva morte della figlia primogenita e di un altro figlio, di quattro anni. Alla prima versione, del 1876, per soli, coro e pianoforte seguirà il completamento della versione orchestrale nel 1877. La cantata consta di dieci numeri, dei quali solo il primo e l’ultimo sono tematicamente interconnessi, con la ripresa dei temi iniziali, in modo maggiore, nella sontuosa fuga finale. La partitura venne ultimata a Praga il 13 di novembre 1877 e la prima esecuzione avvenne solo tre anni più tardi, il 23 dicembre 1880, per conto dell’Associazione degli artisti della musica di Praga, cui Dvořák dedicò la composizione. Un anno e mezzo dopo, l’opera ebbe altre due esecuzioni praghesi, ed una a Budapest. Nel marzo 1884, sotto la direzione dell’autore, lo Stabat ottenne un grandioso successo alla Royal Albert Hall di Londra, con un complesso di ben 800 coristi, cui seguirono numerose altre esecuzioni europee.
