Reis met Phion mee naar de Oriënt. De muziek die daar klinkt is van een betoverende schoonheid en rijkdom. Exotisch, maar tegelijkertijd met onverwachte en verrassende raakvlakken met de ‘westerse’ muziek. Luister maar naar de Nocturnes van Debussy, waarin hij Parijse taferelen een oosters mystieke tint geeft. Of de Danssuite van Bartók, waarin hij de Hongaarse dansen, via de Roma-muziek verbindt met de Arabische cultuur. Een schitterend programma waar klassieke composities en muziek uit de Arabische wereld hand in hand gaan. 

 

Liederen van Wahab 
De Turks-Nederlandse mezzosopraan Aylin Sezer zingt Sheherazade van Ravel. Haar oriëntaalse wortels komen goed van pas in deze liederen die geïnspireerd zijn op de sprookjessfeer van 1001 Nacht. De Palestijnse zangeres Nai Barghouti steekt de grens verder over en zingt twee liederen van de Egyptische componist Abdel Wahab. Deze liederen werden oorspronkelijk gezongen door Umm Kulthum, de beroemdste zangeres die Egypte ooit gekend heeft, en de Libanese ster Fairouz. Zij waren in de vorige eeuw in het hele Midden-Oosten levende legendes. Nu klinken de liederen in schitterende symfonische arrangementen, gespeeld door Phion onder leiding van Otto Tausk. Een grensverleggende ontmoeting tussen oost en west die je niet mag missen.

Travel with Phion to the Orient. The music that sounds there is of an enchanting beauty and richness. Exotic, but at the same time with unexpected and surprising interfaces with 'western' music. Just listen to Debussy's Nocturnes, in which he gives Parisian scenes an oriental mystical tint. Or Bartók's Dance Suite, in which he connects Hungarian dances with the Arab culture via Roma music. A wonderful program where classical compositions and music from the Arab world go hand in hand. 

 

Songs of Wahab 
The Turkish-Dutch mezzo-soprano Aylin Sezer sings Sheherazade van Ravel. Her oriental roots come in handy in these songs that are inspired by the fairytale atmosphere of 1001 Nacht. The Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti crosses the border further and sings two songs by the Egyptian composer Abdel Wahab. These songs were originally sung by Umm Kulthum, the most famous singer Egypt has ever known, and Lebanese star Fairouz. They were living legends throughout the Middle East in the last century. Now the songs sound in beautiful symphonic arrangements, played by Phion under the baton of Otto Tausk. A groundbreaking meeting between East and West that is not to be missed.
