Interview with Daniele Rustioni, musical director of the Opéra de Lyon

A meeting between four young people opens the lyrical season. Richard Wagner was 32 when he conducted the premiere of his opera Tannhäuser in Dresden. We are in 1845 and it is already his fifth lyrical work.
The Franco-German David Hermann, the youngest director to have ever worked at the Salzburg Festival, at 29, is inspired here by the torn universe of Philip K. Dick, whom Ridley Scott made famous with his film- cult Blade Runner in 1982.
Daniele Rustioni, 38, is inaugurating his new position as musical director of the Opéra de Lyon.
And Tannhäuser is a young hero torn between the sensual passion that attaches him to the goddess Venus and the divine love he has for the pure and holy Elizabeth. Three acts of sustained intensity plunge us into a journey through the composer's obsessions and incredible musical inventions, a journey into his visionary lyricism.

Une rencontre entre quatre jeunes gens ouvre la saison lyrique. Richard Wagner a 32 ans lorsqu’il dirige la première de son opéra Tannhäuser à Dresde. Nous sommes en 1845 et c’est déjà sa cinquième œuvre lyrique.
Le franco-allemand David Hermann, le plus jeune metteur en scène à avoir jamais oeuvré au Festival de Salzbourg, à 29 ans, s’inspire ici de l’univers déchiré de Philip K. Dick, que Ridley Scott rendit célèbre avec son film-culte Blade Runner en 1982.
Daniele Rustioni, 38 ans, inaugure quant à lui sa nouvelle fonction de directeur musical de l’Opéra de Lyon.
Et Tannhäuser est un jeune héros écartelé entre la passion sensuelle qui l’attache à la déesse Vénus et l’amour divin qu’il porte à la pure et sainte Élisabeth. Trois actes d’une intensité soutenue, nous plongent dans une traversée des obsessions et des inventions musicales inouïes du compositeur, un voyage dans son lyrisme visionnaire.
