Desperate to become a nobleman, citizen Jourdain emulates Count Dorante. He stole an immense sum of money from Jourdain for the production of a mythological opera at Jourdain's house, starring Dorante and the Countess Dorimene. In return, he promises Jourdain an invitation to dinner with the Mughal Emperor of Kachikistan. Joudain's housekeeper Nicole and his family see through Dorante's machinations and decide to interfere in the action during the opera's performance...

" Ariadne auf Naxos " had already been conceived in 1912 by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal for performance with Molière's comedy " Der Bürger als Edelmann ". With the combination of opera and drama, they tried to fathom the different effects of tragedy and comedy. Christian Weise's team has developed a new version of the play for Darmstadt, in which drama and opera are interwoven through a joint action by the entire ensemble - in a ludicrous plot about loyalty and fraud, Jourdain loses himself deeper and deeper in a fanatical fight for his life's dream, to be someone other than what he is.
