A forest for lost loved ones, lost in themselves and swallowed by the surreal.

The Fairy Queen is one of the countless works that Henry Purcell wrote for theater. Like so many works from that time, it is an adaptation of an earlier written play, in this case Shakespeare's Midsummer Night 's Dream, adapted to the zeitgeist . The famous comedy is mainly set in a forest ruled by Oberon and Titania. Four young lovers wander in a dreamlike atmosphere. Searching for each other or themselves, confused by the desire that drives them, overwhelmed by the lust and plaything of Puck, Oberon's servant. Shakespeare's Midsummer Night 's Dream was transformed into The Fairy Queen in the 17th century: a spectacle in which songs and dances were added and all the registers of the theater were pulled out.

The Flemish director Wouter Van Looy stages (After) The Fairy Queen . His approach creates an aesthetic that intertwines visual impressions, fleeting and, like the characters, absorbed in the surreal. He invites the young Belgian artist Freija Van Esbroeck for this: she arms the allegorical characters who populate the story with costumes, masks and animal prostheses of an astonishing poetry. Emanuelle Haïm conducts her vocal and instrumental ensemble Le Concert d'Astrée.

The Fairy Queen is één van de talloze werken die Henry Purcell voor theater schreef. Zoals zovele werken uit die tijd is het een aan de tijdsgeest aangepaste bewerking van een vroeger geschreven stuk, in dit geval Shakespeares Midzomernachtdroom. Het beroemde blijspel speelt zich hoofdzakelijk af in een bos waarin Oberon en Titania heersen. In een droomachtige sfeer dwalen vier jonge geliefden rond. Op zoek naar elkaar of zichzelf, verward door het verlangen dat hen drijft, overweldigd door lust en speelbal van Puck, Oberons knecht. Shakespeares Midzomernachtdroom werd in de 17de eeuw omgevormd tot The Fairy Queen: een spektakelstuk waarin liederen en dansen werden toegevoegd en alle registers van het theater werden opengetrokken.

De Vlaamse regisseur Wouter Van Looy ensceneert (After) The Fairy Queen. Zijn aanpak creëert een esthetiek die visuele impressies in elkaar laat haken, vluchtig en net als de personages opgaand in het surreële. Hij nodigt daarvoor de jonge Belgische kunstenares Freija Van Esbroeck uit: zij wapent de allegorische personages die het verhaal bevolken met kostuums, maskers en dierlijke protheses van een bevreemdende poëzie. Emanuelle Haïm dirigeert haar vocaal en instrumentaal ensemble Le Concert d'Astrée.
