After the completion of the festive tableau Libušreaches out to Smetana, at a time of persistent professional attacks on his person, for a play by the French playwright, which he saw translated by Emanuel Züngel in the Provisional Theatre, and immediately saw potential in it for the libretto of his next opera. Züngel accepted the offer to rework the one-act comedy into an opera libretto and transferred its plot from France to the Czech Republic at the composer's request. Smetana 's Two Widows opens the door to another of its unique music-dramatic worlds for Czech opera; a comic conversational opera modeled after the French opéra-comique genre is created, the plot of which is set in the drawing room of a country estate and the humor is based on situational comedy.
As Václav Holzknecht writes in his book Bedřich Smetana:“The Two Widows is a work of great creative grace, of a relaxed and unfettered delight to evoke a world of people of choice manners, fine culture, and amiable atmosphere in a blooming country setting; it is an exhalation from life's sorrows and an escape from life's greyness, a kind of summer féerie with a happy ending."

Po dokončení slavnostního tableau Libuše sahá Smetana, v čase přetrvávajících profesních útoků na svou osobu, po činoherní předloze francouzského dramatika, kterou zhlédl v překladu Emanuela Züngela v Prozatímním divadle, a okamžitě v ní spatřil potenciál pro libreto své další opery. Züngel přijal nabídku na přepracování jednoaktové komedie v operní libreto a její děj na skladatelovu žádost přenesl z Francie do Česka. Smetana Dvěma vdovami otevírá české opeře dveře do dalšího ze svých jedinečných hudebnědramatických světů; vzniká komická konverzační opera po vzoru francouzského žánru opéra-comique, jejíž děj je zasazen do salónu venkovského statku a humor je založen na situační komice.
Jak píše Václav Holzknecht ve své knize Bedřich Smetana: „Dvě vdovy jsou dílem velké tvůrčí milosti, uvolněné a ničím nepoutané rozkoše vyvolat svět lidí vybraných způsobů, jemné kultury a vlídného ovzduší v prostředí kvetoucího venkova; je to výdech ze životních strastí a únik z životní šedi, jakási letní féerie s dobrým koncem.“
