Three Tales – three stories:

1. A gigantic zeppelin will cross the Atlantic. During the landing near New York, it bursts into flames – the burning zeppelin becomes a symbol of the technical hubris of the 20th century.

2. On Bikini Atoll, American forces will carry out nuclear tests that will make the islands permanently uninhabitable.

3. Dolly the sheep will be the first mammal to be cloned. When Dolly dies at just 6 years old, the sheep is showing signs of aging that scientists attribute to it being derived from an adult cell.

The opera ›Three Tales‹ by Steve Reich is a groundbreaking work from the late 20th century, which breaks new ground both in terms of content and form. In a quasi-documentary manner, the opera tells of events that have had a lasting influence on our modern consciousness.

Mainly due to the high technical requirements, the work has so far been denied a distribution beyond the narrow circle of top-class festivals. The performances of the Wuppertal Opera will add the opera to the municipal theater repertoire for the first time and allow the audience to experience the work directly on stage in an installation situation.

Three Tales – drei Geschichten:

1. Ein gigantischer Zeppelin wird den Atlantik überqueren. Während der Landung bei New York geht er in Flammen auf – der brennende Zeppelin wird zu einem Symbol für die technische Hybris des 20. Jahrhunderts.

2. Auf dem Bikini-Atoll werden die amerikanischen Streitkrafte Atomtests durchführen, die die Inseln dauerhaft unbewohnbar machen.

3. Das Schaf Dolly wird das erste geklonte Säugetier werden. Als Dolly im Alter von nur 6 Jahren stirbt, weist das Schaf Alterserscheinungen auf, die Wissenschaftler darauf zurück führen, dass es aus der Zelle eines erwachsenen Tieres stammt.

Die Oper ›Three Tales‹ von Steve Reich ist ein bahnbrechendes Werk des ausgehenden 20. Jahrhunderts, das sowohl inhaltlich als auch formal eigenständig neue Wege beschreitet. Die Oper erzählt quasi dokumentarisch von Ereignissen, die nachhaltig unser Bewusstsein in der Moderne beeinflusst haben.

Vor allem aufgrund der hohen technischen Anforderungen ist dem Werk bislang eine Verbreitung über den engen Kreis hochkarätiger Festivals hinaus verwehrt geblieben. Die Aufführungen der Oper Wuppertal werden die Oper erstmals dem Stadttheaterrepertoire hinzufügen und das Werk in einer Installations-Situation mit dem Publikum auf der Bühne unmittelbar erlebbar machen.
