In order to get hold of the escaped political prisoner Cesare Angelotti, police chief Baron Scarpia takes the painter Mario Cavaradossi, who was involved in the escape, and his lover, the opera diva Floria Tosca, who is also coveted by Scarpia, under his power and becomes entangled with them both in a cruel dance of death about love, jealousy, torture, cynicism, greed, blackmail up to murder and suicide.

Giacomo Puccini's »Tosca«, premiered in Rome in 1900, is a brutal cabinet of atrocities, set in the most emotional music in a veristic, film-like manner and grandiosely colorful, and today – equipped with immortal hits such as »Vissi d'arte« and »E lucevan le stelle«, one of the best the really great titles of the opera repertoire. For the Gärtnerplatz premiere, director and set designer Stefano Poda has reworked his interpretation of the political thriller in a visually stunning way!

Um des entflohenen politischen Häftlings Cesare Angelotti wieder habhaft zu werden, bringt Polizeichef Baron Scarpia den an der Flucht beteiligten Maler Mario Cavaradossi und dessen Geliebte, die Operndiva Floria Tosca, die gleichzeitig auch von Scarpia heiß begehrt wird, in seine Gewalt und verstrickt sich mit den beiden in einen grausamen Totentanz um Liebe, Eifersucht, Folter, Zynismus, Gier, Erpressung bis hin zu Mord und Selbstmord.

Giacomo Puccinis »Tosca«, 1900 in Rom uraufgeführt, ist ein brutales Kabinett der Grausamkeiten, veristisch-filmschnittartig und grandios farbenreich in emotionalste Musik gesetzt und zählt heute – ausgestattet mit unsterblichen Hits wie »Vissi dʼarte« und »E lucevan le stelle«, zu den ganz großen Titeln des Opernrepertoires. Für die Gärtnerplatz-Erstaufführung erarbeitet Regisseur und Bühnenbildner Stefano Poda seine Deutung des Polit-Thrillers bildgewaltig neu!
