While La Bohème consists only of poetry and not of action, it is said that with Tosca it is the other way around: only action, no poetry. Even the librettist Giuseppe Giacosa found Sardou's original completely unsuitable for an opera. "What prompted Puccini to deal with such a real and brutal subject, the actors of which are little more than puppets entangled in a highly intelligent, cleverly designed plot?" Asked the music critic Mosco Carner. Maybe just that? Puccini's tense sex-and-crime masterpiece became an absolute core piece of opera literature - and Willy Decker's staging classics have been a long-running repertoire at the Stuttgart State Opera for over 20 years.
