Puccini set his dramatic love triangle, Tosca, in the politically divided world of 19th century Rome, a period of oppression, persecution and torture. The political zeal of the protagonists, their struggle for freedom and their all-consuming passion combine in this eternal tale that remains relevant to this day.

For stage director Peter Langdal, Tosca is “about people, real living people of flesh and blood, who desire, yearn, love, hate, are attracted and repulsed – all for which they perish”.

Puccini was an accomplished hit-maker, and his musical drama is both exceedingly beautiful and extremely effective, offering a medley of dramatic moments.

We are seduced and repulsed in equal measure by the powerful Scarpia; we suffer with the beautiful Tosca as she sings of how she has dedicated her life to art; and we mourn when her beloved Cavaradossi, accompanied by a solo clarinet, voices his farewell to life.

Grand emotions are stirred when Malko Award-winner Rafael Payare raises his baton to direct the Royal Danish Orchestra’s grand, Late Romantic orchestral ensemble.
