Está considerada una de las óperas más representativas del repertorio verista italiano (estilo realista-naturalista) de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y principios del XX, por su intensidad dramática, con escenas genialmente impactantes como el "Te Deum" del Coro mixto y el Barón Scarpia del final del primer acto, y por albergar algunas de las arias más bellas y emocionantes del repertorio, como el "Vissi d'arte" de la protagonista femenina Floria Tosca, del segundo acto, o el "e lucevan le stelle" del protagonista masculino Mario Cavaradossi, en el tercer acto y último de la obra.
