(Re)discover Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar's Bride, a Russian operatic masterpiece long absent from Western stages and brought to life in this stunning 2013 production by the Staatskapelle Dresden, conducting legend Daniel Barenboim and stage director Dmitri Tcherniakov! 

Inspired by tragic events during the 16th-century reign of Ivan the Terrible, Ilia Tyumenev’s gripping libretto tells the tale of Marfa Sobakina, the daughter of a rich Siberian merchant who wins a competition to become the third wife of the Tsar Ivan IV (known to history as “the Terrible”!). After triumphing over hundreds of other young women to become the Tsar's bride, Marfa was struck down by a strange illness and died just days after the wedding. Dmitri Tcherniakov’s staging transports the harrowing tale to a dystopian modern world in which the media rules in a dictatorship, manipulating the populace through high tech propaganda. In this dark universe, the Tsar is a Big Brother-like concoction of the media,and the competition an inhuman reality show created to amuse the masses… A truly brilliant production that has made waves since its premiere!

Dmitri Tcherniakov recently staged Rimsky-Korsakov's rarely seen opera "The Tsar's Bride" with great success at the Schillertheater in Berlin. Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's opera, which premiered in Moscow in 1899, is a tale of love, envy, jealousy and political intrigue. Marfa, betrothed to her childhood sweetheart Lykov, is chosen by the Tsar to become his wife and is also the object of desire of the Tsar's defeated Oprichnik Gryaznoy. Lyubasha, herself in love with Grjasnoj, poisons her rival Marfa out of jealousy.
Acclaimed Russian director Tcherniakov, who directs and designs this production, has brought the story up to date. The search for the right first lady is now carried out via an online database: "The search for the bride becomes a TV casting show and the prize is a virtual bachelor czar, whose digital image can be seen on a screen" ( bloomberg.com).
This production is also very convincing from a musical point of view: Something "more artistically coherent, more concentrated than The Tsar's Bride has not been experienced at the Berlin State Opera for years. The singers, the musicians of the Staatskapelle, extras, all literally kneel down in this score". , wrote Die Zeit enthusiastically. The Süddeutsche Zeitung joined in the hymn of praise: "Daniel Barenboim at the conductor's desk of the Staatskapelle Berlin ... makes the acoustic passages of the score glow and expresses them effectively". The result is a Tsar's bride that will be talked about in Berlin for a long time to come: "A triumph !” (FAZ).
