In 1857, Giuseppe Verdi accepted an order from the Neapolitan theater of San Carlo. The composer had long wanted to write an opera based on Shakespeare's tragedy King Lear. However, the theater could not invite those singers who, according to Verdi, could adequately embody his plan. Un ballo in maschera was born as a compromise. The spectacular plot about the assassination of the Swedish king Gustav III was already successfully tested in public: Daniel Aubert wrote an opera in 1833 to a libretto by the French playwright Eugene Scribe, which was based on this story. And the set of actors was quite suitable for the standards of the usual troupe of the Italian opera house.

The plot of the opera has all the necessary qualities to completely capture the attention of the public: a twisted intrigue that weaves a love triangle into a political conspiracy, vivid characters, strong passions, sharp situations and impressive theatrical effects - a scene of witchcraft, a love duet on a night field where executions are performed , and murder against the backdrop of a masquerade. As Giuseppe Verdi himself said about him: "The drama is brilliant, and entirely in the mores of our time."

Gustav III can be called one of the brightest rulers of the 18th century. He was both an outstanding political leader and a dictator of tastes and fashions: he gave the country a new constitution and created the "Swedish" style in art. His entire life reads like a gripping novel, and his reign began and ended at the opera house. At the Paris Opera, he was caught by the news of the death of his father, and at the Stockholm Opera, during a masquerade ball, he became a victim of a conspiracy of aristocrats.

In the midst of rehearsals at the Teatro San Carlo, Italian emigrants in Paris made an attempt on the life of Emperor Napoleon III, continuing the chain of assassination attempts on royalty, which at that time happened in Europe with unenviable constancy. After this incident, it became impossible to bring a character of royal origin onto the stage. The theater insisted on a major revision of the opera. Verdi demanded to break the contract. The theater, in turn, threatened the composer with prison. The scandal turned out to be grandiose and went to the pages of the international press. Correspondents from Naples included in each report the latest news about the progress of the trial.

Taking the score from San Carlo, Verdi began negotiations with the Roman theater Apollo, focusing on the next carnival season. The requirements of censorship here were not distinguished by softness, however, they were more forgiving. True, I had to make several "amendments". The action was moved to America in colonial times. Gustav III became the governor of Boston, Count Richard, and his secretary Ankarström became a Creole, but at the same time received an Italian name - Renato. But in order to see his creation on stage, the composer already agreed to America, and even to the Caucasus. In Rome, the opera also acquired its current name, under which it has since become known to the whole world.

In Russia, Un ballo in maschera was first presented in St. Petersburg by an Italian troupe. And the first domestic production took place at the Bolshoi Theater in 1880. Having dropped out of the repertoire in the late 1890s, Un ballo in maschera returned to the theater stage in 1979, staged by conductor Algis Zhuraitis and director Semyon Stein. Zurab Sotkilava and Alexander Lomonosov, Tamara Milashkina, Makvala Kasrashvili and Galina Kalinina, Yuri Mazurok and Alexander Voroshilo, Elena Obraztsova, Irina Arkhipova and Tamara Sinyavskaya took the stage among the magnificent scenery of Nikolai Benois and in no less magnificent costumes created according to his sketches, and other prominent artists of the Bolshoi.

In 2018, after an absence of almost fifteen years, Un ballo in maschera returned to the Bolshoi repertoire, this time staged by the Italian creative tandem - conductor Giacomo Sagripanti and director Davide Livermore. As in the previous performance, the action takes place in America, but the starting point in the stage decision was not at all the gallant 18th century. Davide Livermore, a connoisseur not only of Verdi, but also of Alfred Hitchcock, the great master of American cinema in the psychological thriller genre, staged his performance in the noir style of the 1950s.

В 1857 году Джузеппе Верди принял заказ от неаполитанского театра Сан-Карло. Композитор давно хотел написать оперу по трагедии Шекспира «Король Лир». Однако театр не смог пригласить тех певцов и певиц, которые, по мнению Верди, смогли бы адекватно воплотить его замысел. «Бал-маскарад» родился как компромисс. Эффектный сюжет об убийстве шведского короля Густава III был уже успешно опробован на публике: Даниэль Обер в 1833 году написал оперу на либретто французского драматурга Эжена Скриба, в основу которого была положена эта история. И набор действующих лиц вполне подходил под стандарты обычной труппы итальянского оперного театра.

Сюжет оперы обладает всеми необходимыми качествами для того, чтобы безраздельно завладеть вниманием публики: закрученной интригой, вплетающей любовный треугольник в политический заговор, яркими характерами, сильными страстями, острыми ситуациями и впечатляющими театральными эффектами — сценой колдовства, любовным дуэтом на ночном поле, где совершаются казни, и убийством на фоне маскарада. Как отозвался о нем сам Джузеппе Верди: «Драма блестящая, и всецело в нравах нашего времени».

Густав III может быть назван одним из самых ярких правителей XVIII века. Он был и незаурядным политическим лидером, и диктатором вкусов и мод: дал стране новую конституцию и создал «шведский» стиль в искусстве. Вся его жизнь читается как захватывающий роман, а правление началось и закончилось в оперном театре. В Парижской опере его застало известие о кончине отца, а в Стокгольмской во время бала-маскарада он стал жертвой заговора аристократов.

В разгар репетиций, проходивших в театре Сан-Карло, итальянские эмигранты в Париже совершили покушение на императора Наполеона III, продолжившее цепь покушений на царственных особ, которые в то время случались в Европе с незавидным постоянством. После этого происшествия вывести на сцену персонажа королевского происхождения стало невозможным. Театр настаивал на капитальной переработке оперы. Верди потребовал разорвать контракт. Требования цензуры и здесь не отличались мягкостью, однако были более щадящими. Правда, пришлось сделать несколько «поправок». Действие было перенесено в Америку колониальных времен. Густав III превратился в губернатора Бостона графа Ричарда, а его секретарь Анкарстрём стал креолом, однако при этом получил итальянское имя — Ренато. Но, чтобы увидеть свое творение на сцене, композитор уже был согласен и на Америку, и даже на Кавказ. В Риме опера обрела и свое нынешнее название, под которым с тех пор стала известна всему миру.

В России «Бал-маскарад» был впервые представлен в Санкт-Петербурге силами итальянской труппы. А первая отечественная постановка состоялась в Большом театре в 1880 году. Выпав из репертуара в конце 1890-х, «Бал-маскарад» вернулся на сцену театра в 1979 году — в постановке дирижера Альгиса Жюрайтиса и режиссера Семена Штейна. Среди пышных декораций Николая Бенуа и в не менее пышных костюмах, созданных по его эскизам, на сцену выходили Зураб Соткилава и Александр Ломоносов, Тамара Милашкина, Маквала Касрашвили и Галина Калинина, Юрий Мазурок и Александр Ворошило, Елена Образцова, Ирина Архипова и Тамара Синявская, и другие выдающиеся артисты Большого.

В 2018 году, после почти пятнадцатилетнего отсутствия, «Бал-маскарад» вновь вернулся в репертуар Большого, на сей раз в постановке итальянского творческого тандема — дирижера Джакомо Сагрипанти и режиссера Давиде Ливерморе. Как и в предыдущем спектакле, действие происходит в Америке, однако отправной точкой в сценическом решении стал вовсе не галантный XVIII век. Давиде Ливерморе, знаток творчества не только Верди, но и Альфреда Хичкока, великого мастера американского кино в жанре психологического триллера, поставил свой спектакль в стиле нуара 50-х годов ХХ столетия.
