The Mask Ball by Verdi was written in 1859 and is based on Gustave III ou Le Bal Masqué by Eugène Scribe, which in turn is based on the murder of the Swedish king Gustav 3 in the Stockholm Opera in 1792. The opera has different versions due to the censorship at the time was written in. The original version was about the murder of King Gustav 3. In the Americanized version, the action was added to Boston in the 17th century, and the character gallery was replaced due to censorship in several countries; there was strong opposition to staging a royal assassination on stage. However, Verdi himself never returned the action in the opera to Europe later in life, when he had the opportunity to do so.

It was not until some time in the 20th century that the sign was used again. Today, the original version is the most played.

The collaboration on Maskeballet is a great exchange of experiences between the National Opera and the district opera at Nordfjordeid. Opera Nordfjord's volunteers look forward to collaborating with the expertise from Bjørvika and gaining new lessons and expertise through inspiring collaboration over several weeks.

Maskeballet av Verdi vart skriven i 1859 og er basert på Gustave III ou Le Bal Masqué av Eugène Scribe, som igjen er basert på mordet på den svenske kong Gustav 3 i Stockholmsoperaen i 1792. Operaen har forskjellige versjonar på grunn av sensuren på den tida den vart skriven i. Den opprinnelege versjonen handla om mordet på kong Gustav 3. I den amerikaniserte versjonen vart handlinga lagt til Boston på 1600-talet, og persongalleriet vart bytta ut på grunn av sensuren i fleire land; det var sterk motstand mot å setje opp eit kongemord på scena. Verdi sjølv la likevel aldri handlinga i operaen tilbake til Europa seinare i livet, då han hadde høve til det.

Først eit stykke ut i det 20. århundre vart den teken i bruk igjen. I dag er den opprinnelege versjonen den mest spelte.

Samarbeidet om Maskeballet vert ei flott utveksling av erfaringar mellom Nasjonaloperaen og distriktsoperaen på Nordfjordeid. Opera Nordfjord sine frivillige medarbeidarar ser fram til å samarbeide med ekspertisen frå Bjørvika og få ny lærdom og kompetanse gjennom inspirerande  samarbeid over fleire veker.
