Alles beginnt in einer Anwaltskanzlei. Der Erbschaftsstreit der Familien Gregor und Prus soll erneut vor Gericht. Mit dem Auftritt Emilia Martys wandelt sich die Geschichte ins Fantastische. Die berühmte Sängerin erkundigt sich ausgerechnet nach diesem Prozess und verblüfft die Anwesenden mit Details aus längst vergangenen Zeiten. Zunächst kann sie keine Beweise vorlegen, um den Fortgang des Prozesses zu beeinflussen. Doch dann wird mit ihrer Hilfe tatsächlich ein verschollen geglaubtes Testament gefunden. Emilia Marty aber ist nicht an dem Testament, sondern an einer bestimmten griechischen Handschrift interessiert. Die Sache Makropulos nimmt ihren Lauf.

„Die Sache Makropulos“, uraufgeführt 1926, zählt zu den Reifewerken Leoš Janáčeks und basiert auf der gleichnamigen Komödie Karel Čapeks, die der Komponist im Dezember 1922 kennenlernte. Bereits im Jahr zuvor hatte Čapek mit dem Drama „R.U.R.“ (Rossum’s Universal Robots) über die Herstellung künstlicher Menschen eine faszinierende Zukunftsvision entworfen. Seine „Sache Makropulos“ wandte sich ebenfalls einem alten Menschheitstraum zu: der Verlängerung des irdischen Lebens. Janáček war von der Geschichte fasziniert: „Eine 337-jährige Frau, die aber gleichzeitig noch jung und schön ist. Möchten Sie das auch sein?“, fragte er seine um fast 40 Jahre jüngere Geliebte Kamila Stösslová. „Wir sind glücklich, weil wir wissen, dass unser Leben nicht lange währt. Deshalb ist es notwendig, jeden Augenblick zu nutzen, und richtig zu nutzen …“

Mit der „Sache Makropulos“ steht erstmals seit der Saison 1990/91 wieder eine Oper Leoš Janáčeks auf dem Spielplan des Mainfranken Theaters.

It all starts in a law firm. The inheritance dispute between the Gregor and Prus families is to go back to court. With the appearance of Emilia Marty, the story changes into something fantastic. But then, with her help, a will that was thought to be lost is actually found. But Emilia Marty is not interested in the will, but in a specific Greek manuscript. The Makropulos affair takes its course.

"The Makropulos Affair", premiered in 1926, is one of Leoš Janáček's mature works and is based on the comedy of the same name by Karel Čapek, which the composer met in December 1922. The year before, Čapek had created a fascinating vision of the future with the drama "RUR" (Rossum's Universal Robots) about the production of artificial humans. His "Makropulos Affair" also turned to an old dream of mankind: the prolongation of earthly life. Janáček was fascinated by the story: “A 337-year-old woman who is still young and beautiful at the same time. Would you like to be that too?” he asked his lover Kamila Stösslová, who was almost 40 years his junior. “We are happy because we know that our life does not last long. Therefore, it is necessary to seize every moment, and to seize it properly..."

For the first time since the 1990/91 season, an opera by Leoš Janáček is on the program of the Mainfranken Theater with the Makropulos Affair.
