Dramma lirico in quattro atti di Jules Massenet su libretto in francese di Édouard Blau, Paul Milliet e Georges Hartmann, Werther venne tratto dal romanzo epistolare I dolori del giovane Werther di Goethe. La prima rappresentazione, con libretto tradotto in tedesco da Max Kalbeck, avvenne solo nel 1892, il 16 febbraio al Wiener Staatsoper. In Italia fu messo in scena nel 1895 al Teatro alla Scala di Milano. A Sassari l'opera fece la sua prima apparizione nel 1909 al Politeama, con undici esecuzioni di cui fu protagonista il grande tenore cagliaritano Piero Schiavazzi, tornando poi nel 1987.

Lyric drama in four acts by Jules Massenet with a libretto in French by Édouard Blau, Paul Milliet and Georges Hartmann, Werther was based on Goethe's epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther . The first performance, with libretto translated into German by Max Kalbeck, took place only in 1892, on February 16 at the Wiener Staatsoper. In Italy it was staged in 1895 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. In Sassari the opera made its first appearance in 1909 at the Politeama, with eleven performances featuring the great Cagliari tenor Piero Schiavazzi, then returning in 1987.
