On May 5, 1914, Alban Berg attended the first performance of the theatrical Woyzeck by playwright Georg Büchner. Impacted by history, he decided to turn it into an opera, and in 1922 he closed the score, integrating into the plot his own experience as a worker in the Ministry of War during World War I. The brutality and despair of a society drowned by the horrors of war have been evoked since its premiere.

Immediate success and masterpiece of the Vienna School, for its powerful fusion of music and drama is inspiring and a cry of protest of Berg's expressionism. A story with a tragic dimension that goes beyond the literal to become a universal theme and talks about elements as inherent in the human condition as life, love, desire and death.

Wozzeck is a soldier with a daily existence of misery and alignment who will succumb humiliated to the wickedness of the harsh laws of exploitation and abuse. Victim of the cruelty of the experiments of the military physician and compelled by his captain to perform the most humble and servile work, he is nothing but an individual reduced to the object, the property of the ruling class. The home with Marie, his mistress, and the son in common are his real paradise, but when the woman betrays him with the Drum Major a spiral of anger and self-destructive jealousy is activated: a war against the world, but also internal and mental.

An extraordinary proposal that brings together Matthias Goerne as a huge protagonist; Josep Pons, inspired and recognized director in this repertoire, and a staging signed by the South African plastic artist William Kentridge. The production, from the Salzburg Festival, is an example of a totally elaborate and sublime work of art full of Kentridge's own codes: projections, charcoal drawings, criticism from the absurd, Johannesburg-centered scenes ... all to underscore the growing dehumanization that plagues Wozzeck’s existence. The final macabre dance is a parade of humanity: but where is the procession heading?
