The Stuttgart Kantorei was founded in 1994 by cantor Kay Johannsen and consists of around 70 semi-professional singers. The choir was  awarded 1st and 2nd prizes at the German choir competitions in 2006 in Kiel, 2014 in Weimar and 2018 in Freiburg and received further prizes at the Baden-Württemberg state choir competitions in 1997 (2nd), 2001 (2nd) and 2005 (1st). .) 2013 (1st) and 2017 (1st). 

The  ensemble's repertoire includes compositions by Brahms, Bruckner, Elgar, Reger, Debussy, Schönberg, Kodaly, Britten, Martin, Poulenc, Penderecki, Schnebel, Orbán, Swider and Johannsen in the area of ​​a cappella literature as well as works in the area of ​​choral symphonic music by Beethoven, Berlioz, Verdi, Bruckner, Dvořák, Elgar, Mahler, Zemlinsky, Schmidt, Schönberg, Stravinsky, Martin, Orff, Poulenc, Bernstein and Rihm.

The Stuttgarter Kantorei gives concerts primarily in the Stuttgart Collegiate Church , but has also been a guest at the Berlin Philharmonie , the Lucerne Festival , the Schwäbisch Gmünd European Church Music Festival , the Oriental Arts Center Shanghai and the concert hall of the Forbidden City Beijing. In 2014 the choir could be heard at the German Choir Festival in Leipzig. During the Stuttgart cycle Bach: vokal, the Stuttgart Kantorei regularly took on concerts together with the  Stiftsbarock Stuttgart ensemble . Since 2023 it has been an important part of the new concert cycle of the Stiftsmusik Stuttgart , |: Mendelssohn :| . Among other things, she performs the oratorios Paul and Elias as well as psalm settings with an orchestra.

Recordings have been released on the Carus label (Franz Schubert: Messe A-Dur ) and on CDs by SWR and Strube Verlag. The Stuttgarter Kantorei can often be heard on the radio (including Brahms: A German Requiem in 2013 and Franz Schmidt: The Book with Seven Seals in 2014) and can be seen several times on television broadcasts.

In 2024 the Stuttgarter Kantorei will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The Stuttgarter Kantorei begins the year with an a cappella concert in the StadtPalais - Museum for Stuttgart . She will perform Bach's St. John Passion in the collegiate church on Good Friday, before Mendelssohn psalm settings are on the program at the anniversary concert in October. The concert year ends with another a cappella concert in the collegiate church and a guest performance in Karlsruhe. In addition, the Stuttgart Kantorei organizes several festive services in the collegiate church.

The extensive and intensive work of the Stuttgarter Kantorei is made possible by the extraordinary commitment of the selected singers as well as by musical and vocal training and accompaniment. The Stuttgarter Kantorei rehearses weekly (Wednesday evenings) and also on 2-3 weekends per year.
