Bio: Karin Hendrickson is establishing herself as a conductor equally at home with opera and orchestra. For 2019, Karin is one of three conductors invited as the Atelier des Créatrices d’Opéra Conductor Participant at the Festival Aix-en-Provence (Academie), France, as well as the ENOA Young Conductor Residency with the Gulbenkian Orchestra (Lisbon; Lorenzo Viotti, Music Director). Karin is currently entering her second year as Assistant Conductor for the Royal Northern Sinfonia (Lars Vogt, Music Director), and was also hired to assist Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra at their Proms appearance this summer. Notably she will also lead the Orchestre national d'Ile de France in their December 2020 regional tour. Karin was previously honored to have Marin Alsop’s mentorship through the Taki-Concordia Fellowship programme from 2013-2015, and since has been an Assistant Conductor to Marin Alsop for various concerts and projects, including her recent concert at the 2019 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the BBC Proms/Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Verdi Requiem, and the first European tour of her tenure with the Orchestra of Sao Paulo (including their Proms and Concertgebouw debuts). Karin was appointed Associate Conductor to the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain in 2019 following her success with leading the NYO INSPIRE Orchestra Summer Tour in 2018. This year she will prepare the Orchestra Artistry candidates at the Guildhall School of Music for the London Symphony Orchestra side-by-side (Michael Tilson-Thomas, conductor), while acting as Assistant Conductor. She has also prepared youth orchestras for venues such as the Barbican Centre’s collaboration between the London Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Gustavo Dudamel/Appalachian Spring/Aaron Copland), and for the Southbank Centre (Marin Alsop/War Requiem/Benjamin Britten/Royal Festival Hall; Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Learning and Participation). Maintaining her work with opera and young singers, Karin has also been Music Director for Garsington Youth Opera at Garsington Opera and The Royal Opera House Out Loud Festival, and has twice led the CBSO Shenley Academy programme. Other conducting highlights include Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (USA), Nashville Symphony Orchestra (USA), Kammersymphonie Graz (Austria), Orchestra Sinfônica da USP (Brazil), Sao Paulo Symphony (Brazil), London Mozart Players (UK) and multiple appearances with the Royal Norther Sinfonia (UK) and the Southbank Sinfonia (London), among others. Opera credits include Music Director for the premiere and tour of Opera for the Unknown Woman (Melanie Wilson/Fuel Opera), Music Director for Bloomsbury Opera, Chorus Master for The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and was most recently Music Director for the production of Bernstein’s MASS at the University of North Carolina School for the Arts. Karin was Assistant Conductor this year for the Longborough Festival Opera’s production of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena (Jeremy Silver, Music Director). With first studies in piano performance, Karin has worked with the Hot Springs Music Festival Opera, the George Mason Opera and Dance Company, and has accompanied world premiere solo performances by up-and-coming international composers and artists. While still in high school, Karin composed music for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, recorded by Aretha Franklin and released on NBC Records. Graduating with Distinction from the conducting program at Britain’s Royal Academy of Music (Colin Metters), Karin was twice named a Gordon Foundation winner, receiving the Fred Southall Memorial Prize in her final year. Further awards include talent grants while training at the Peabody Conservatory, an award to train at the Mozarteum, Salzburg under conductor Peter Gülke (2014 Siemens Prize winner), and two awards of support from the European Network of Opera Academies (Festival d’Aix, France; Gulbenkian Foundation, Portugal). Nominated in 2015 for the Nestle-Salzburg Young Conductors award, Karin began her conducting career in the United States as Assistant Conductor to the professional choir Choralis, and also their award-winning chamber choir, Echos, while singing in both. When she moved to the UK to train at the Royal Academy of Music, she continued singing with the London Philharmonic Choir under conductors Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Vladimir Jurowski.
