The Theater an der Wien, built in 1801 by Emanuel Schikaneder - in the spirit of Mozart - is one of the most traditional theaters in Vienna. As one of the oldest theaters in the city, it has seen a number of world premieres of major stage works and legendary stage performances by important artists. Ludwig van Beethoven was Kapellmeister of the house for two years, and his Fidelio premiered here in 1805. The classic Viennese folk theater of Nestroy and Raimund was brought to completion at the Theater an der Wien, as well as the masterpieces of the Golden and Silver Era of operetta, in particular the famous Fledermaus by Johann Strauss and Franz Lehár's The Merry Widow, went around the world from here. Immediately after the Second World War, the stage was turned back into opera for ten years, as the Vienna State Opera, whose building was badly damaged, staged its performances "an der Wien".

The musical era at the Theater an der Wien began in 1965 under the direction of Rolf Kutschera, primarily with Broadway plays in German. Important milestones of the Theater an der Wien were the German premiere of  Cats  in 1983 and the world premiere of the musical  Elisabeth in 1992 , which was followed by further successful musical premieres and German premieres until 2005. In 1987, the Theater an der Wien was incorporated into the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien GmbH, which also includes the Raimund Theater and the Ronacher.


After the long musical era, the Theater an der Wien was rededicated in 2006 as the opera house of the city of Vienna and has since been used in the innovative Stagione system. From 2006 to 2022 artistic director  Roland Geyer managed  the house and positioned the Theater an der Wien in the league of the most successful opera houses in Europe. From the 22/23 season,  Stefan Herheim will take over  the artistic direction of the MusikTheater an der Wien.
