«Aber jetzt habe ich nichts mehr zu arbeiten: total abgebrannt! Also ich bitte: dichten Sie! Es darf sogar ein zweiter Rosenkavalier sein», schreibt Richard Strauss 1927 an Hugo von Hofmannsthal nach Fertigstellung seiner Ägyptischen Helena. Was folgte, sollte die letzte Zusammenarbeit des erfolgreichen Künstler-Gespanns werden: Hofmannsthal starb vier Tage nach Beendigung des Librettos von Arabella. Im Zentrum der Handlung, die in Wien spielt, steht eine adlige Familie, die jedoch vom Zerfall bedroht ist: Graf Waldner hat als notorischer Spieler das Vermögen seiner Familie durchgebracht. Um ihre katastrophale finanzielle Situation zu sanieren, planen Waldner und seine Frau Adelaide, ihre bildschöne ältere Tochter Arabella standesgemäss und geldkräftig zu verheiraten. Umgeben von zahlreichen Verehrern, glaubt Arabella den «Richtigen» allerdings nicht im walzerseligen, vergnügungssüchtigen Wien zu finden – sie erträumt sich einen Fremden. Ihre Hoffnungen werden schliesslich in der Gestalt des urplötzlich aus Kroatien auftauchenden Mandryka erfüllt. Doch ihre tiefe Liebe wird beim abendlichen Fiakerball bereits auf den Prüfstein gestellt: Matteo, ein Verehrer Arabellas, zieht Mandrykas Eifersucht auf sich. Zur Verlobung zwischen Arabella und Mandryka kommt es am Ende doch noch, auch dank Arabellas offenherziger Schwester Zdenka, die, als Junge aufgezogen, heimlich in Matteo verliebt ist. Entstanden in Zeiten tiefer gesellschaftlicher Verunsicherung nach dem Zusammenbruch der Donaumonarchie, der Weltwirtschaftskrise und der aufkommenden Nazikatastrophe, ist die letzte idealisierte Liebesheirat der Operngeschichte damit auch ein Tanz auf dem Vulkan. Der international gefeierte Regisseur Robert Carsen wird Arabella auf die Bühne bringen, Dirigent der fragil-dekadenten, hochvirtuos komponierten Parlando-Oper ist Generalmusikdirektor Fabio Luisi. Ein erlesenes Strauss-Ensemble vereint diese Neuproduktion: Als Arabella debütiert Julia Kleiter, ihre Schwester Zdenka singt Valentina Farcas. Der Österreicher Josef Wagner stellt sich als Mandryka erstmals an unserm Hause vor; Daniel Behle, zuletzt als Belmonte in Zürich zu hören, singt den Matteo.

What followed was to be the last collaboration between the successful artist duo: Hofmannsthal died four days after finishing the libretto of Arabella. At the center of the action, which takes place in Vienna, is a noble family that is threatened with collapse: Count Waldner, a notorious gambler, has spent his family's fortune. In the end, Arabella and Mandryka get engaged, also thanks to Arabella's open-hearted sister Zdenka, who, having been raised as a boy, is secretly in love with Matteo. Created in times of deep social uncertainty after the collapse of the Danube monarchy, the global economic crisis and the coming Nazi catastrophe, the last idealized love marriage in opera history is also a dance on the volcano.
