It was a delicate undertaking for Bizet to present a drama - from the milieu, so to speak - with a crime of passion in the Paris Opéra-Comique. The audience of the premiere, eager for light entertainment music, found today's most-performed opera in the world with its "barbarian music" simply out of place. But Carmen is not a cliché figure from a tourist program who wields the flounce rock. Bizet's opera is perhaps the first, if not the only, realistic opera. The libretto goes back to the novel of the same name by Prosper Mérimée, which referred to an authentic case.

Carmen, who works in a cigarette factory, loves life, she lives self-determined and independently and makes no secret of her life maxim. Her urge for freedom and independence brings José, the man who gave up his civil career for her sake, to the verge of madness. But Carmen's love has wings. When she turns to a star of the arena, the torero Escamillo, the inevitable happens ..
