Music by MIQUEL ORTEGA (in a new version for chamber orchestra) Libretto by Julio Ramos, based on the original work by Federico García Lorca New production by the Teatro de la Zarzuela We know that La casa de Bernarda Alba was Lorca's last play. And now we find the first operatic version in Spanish. Its composer, Miquel Ortega, wrote it between 1991 and 2006, and the libretto is based almost entirely on the original text. Its author, Julio Ramos, only deleted some scenes, changed certain phrases and eliminated secondary characters. Ortega's opera was finally premiered, in his symphonic version, at the Brasov Theater in Romania, on December 13, 2007. Two years later he did it in Spain, at the Santander and Perelada Festivals. And it is now that the camera version will see its premiere. In his Bernarda Alba, Ortega vindicates the rooting of tonality in the operatic genre in order to avoid the death of opera and distancing itself from the public. The dialogues stand out with short phrases and forceful retorts, without falling into banality. He emphasizes the criticism of a society with double standards, where the obsession with religion, false appearances, hypocrisy and virginity is reflected in each of the moments of the work. He also deals with the hierarchization of society in a clear and forceful way. In it, the rural feminine universe lives as something claustrophobic, suffocating and frustrating. Added to this production are figures from the great show such as Ezio Frigerio, Franca Squarciapino or Vinicio Cheli, as well as a splendid cast of voices that will make the bones and blood of these women be seen. The stage director, Bárbara Lluch, considers this to be "the best opera libretto in history". For his part, the assistant musical director and pianist, Rubén Fernández Aguirre, believes that “it is a work of great vocal demand. In addition, word and action are closely linked to the orchestra, without a doubt the tenth character in this opera. Everything adapts to the lyrical expression, to the dramatic needs of the text». A work that strengthens the validity of Lorca in our days. His contemporaneity reminds us that over the years, the poet from Granada has become one of the great myths of the 20th century.
