In times of historical upheaval, the winners are filled with euphoric jubilation, while fear spreads on the part of the losers. When Mozart's play of cheerfulness breaks through, it is the gleeful swan song for dying structures, old privileges, outmoded procedures - including that between man and woman. Mozart (and Beaumarchais) keep their balance on the threshold of time - as an artist on the way to self-marketing, in terms of content in the precise drawing of a weight-shifted society with Almaviva as a ridiculous figure. His class is losing political power, and as a slave to his sexual passion, he compensates for its loss. The wind blows from the past, it blows the wings of the angel of Walter Benjamin's story. He's a storm for the victors a melancholy streak of wind for the losers. The angel only sees debris.
