Les Noces de Figaro de Mozart a connu un succès immédiat lors de sa création à Vienne en 1786. Bien qu’il reprenne la structure traditionnelle des conflits amoureux, des tromperies et des malentendus, cet opéra s’en distingue par plusieurs aspects. Initialement tiré d’une pièce de théâtre française de Beaumarchais de 1784, cette œuvre a été interdite en Autriche en raison de sa représentation négative de la noblesse. Pour présenter leur adaptation, Mozart et son librettiste Da Ponte ont dû obtenir une autorisation spéciale de l’empereur. De plus, les protagonistes principaux sont deux modestes serviteurs. L’opéra présente également le premier grand rôle travesti, Cherubino, joué par « une jeune et très jolie femme ». Le tout est accompagné d’un flux incessant d’arias mémorables, introduit par l’une des plus sublimes ouvertures composées par Mozart.
L’histoire se déroule trois ans après que Figaro est aidé son maître, le Comte Almaviva, à épouser sa bien-aimée, Rosina. Figaro doit maintenant épouser Susanna, la servante de la Comtesse, mais les yeux du Comte s’égarent et il souhaite rétablir la tradition abolie selon laquelle, lors de la nuit de noces d’une servante, son seigneur a un droit de cuissage sur elle. L’intrigue qui en résulte voit Figaro tromper le Comte, la Comtesse et Susanna donner des leçons à leurs hommes, un adolescent multiplier les béguins et une dette cruelle se transformer en une seconde chance d’amour et de parentalité.

Mozart’s four-act opera, Le nozze di Figaro, was an instant hit when it premiered in Vienna in 1786. While on the one hand it’s a classic opera buffa with the usual love triangles, deceptions and mistaken identities, in other ways it stood out. First, because it was based on a 1784 French play by Beaumarchais that was banned in Austria due to its negative portrayal of the nobility (Mozart and his librettist Da Ponte needed special permission from the Emperor for their version), with two ordinary servants as its main lovers. It also featured opera’s first major crossdressing role, Cherubino – to be performed by ‘a young and very pretty woman’ – and a constant stream of memorable arias, all preceded by one of Mozart’s greatest overtures. Set across a single mad day, its action joins Figaro three years after helping his master Count Almaviva to marry his love, Rosina. Now Figaro is to marry the Countess’s lady’s maid, Susanna, but the Count’s eyes are straying, and he wishes to reinstate the abolished tradition whereby, on a servant girl’s wedding night, her lord gets to bed her before her husband. The ensuing human tapestry follows Figaro thwarting the Count, the Countess and Susanna teaching their men lessons, a teenage boy’s multiple crushes, and a cruel debt transformed into a second chance at love and parenthood.
