Shakespeare was an inexhaustible source of inspiration for romantic artists. Verdi is not mistaken, who will compose several masterpieces from his pieces, including the prodigious Otello and Falstaff .

In 1847, it was Macbethwhich fascinates him: the young composer sees in the diabolical Scottish couple the opportunity to break the codes of belcanto. His music will be terrible, dramatic, by turns dazzling and dark - like a painting by Caravaggio! It must be said that the subject is incredibly rich: Macbeth, a Scottish general, lets himself be drawn by his ambitious wife in a series of murders supposed to secure him the throne. But the dead and his guilt haunt him. Even his wife, the terrible Lady Macbeth, will eventually descend into madness - one of the finest pieces of bravery in all of romantic opera! But here, Verdi invents a new style, daring to ask his performers for a song that completely breaks with the customs inherited from Rossini, Bellini and other Donizetti. He wants the rage to be heard, that the darkness of the soul of the protagonists is embodied in their song and in their voice. WithMacbeth , Verdi was already inventing all modernity.

L’ancien directeur de La Comédie de Saint-Étienne Daniel Benoin nous fait le plaisir de signer la mise en scène de ce Macbeth, en coproduction avec l’Opéra de Nice Côte d’Azur et Anthéa Théâtre d’Antibes. Cette oeuvre, créée en 1847 à Florence et finalisée dans sa version actuelle en 1865, est la première adaptation par Verdi d’une pièce de Shakespeare, avant Otello et Falstaff. Le génie de l’opéra romantique puise aux sources du génie shakespearien avec ce drame construit autour d’un couple, Macbeth et Lady Macbeth, prêt à tuer sans limites pour le pouvoir royal. Les sorcières poussent au crime, mais les remords assailliront finalement les assassins, acculés par les Écossais alliés aux Anglais. L’ampleur vocale de la soprano dramatique Catherine Hunold, interprète en 2021 de La Vierge de Massenet sur nos planches, sert le personnage sombre et maléfique de Lady Macbeth. L’orchestre est dirigé par Giuseppe Grazioli. Les grondements, l’effroi, la terreur : la musique de Verdi épouse les émotions des personnages, créant une ambiance hautement théâtrale. Le livret de Francesco Maria Piave, fidèle compagnon de Verdi, transpose fidèlement l’intrigue shakespearienne. La vision du metteur en scène transpose le récit dans une ville industrielle écossaise du XXème siècle, pleine de violence et de souffrances ; elle fait la part belle aux femmes, qui s’emparent du pouvoir.
