A man in a state of emergency: Was it really just a "wind" called love that turned the head of the famous superhero Orlando and catapulted his "mind to the moon"?

Zoroastro urges the warrior Orlando to rein in his passions and tries to bring him back to sanity, which proves to be an extremely difficult task. An emotional cocktail of jealousy and hatred, distrust and overconfidence makes Orlando a shadow of himself. The reason for this is his unrequited love for Angelica, who is in a relationship with Medoro. Dorinda, in turn, desires this, but her lovesickness takes on less pathological excesses. Orlando rages, rages and rages; and reveals himself in his fantasies of violence as a deeply unhappy person who has lost control of himself.

In Ludovico Ariosto Orlando furioso , George Frideric Handel found promising material about the tortuous (misguided) paths of passion. The insanity of the eponymous hero gave him the opportunity to be "out of the ordinary" musically as well: the innovative score throws the scheme of the opera seria out of sync and breaks with the expected. When Orlando hallucinates into the underworld and completely loses touch with reality, Handel uses radical, truly "crazy" means. Even Senesino, the star castrato of the premiere, found the role rather unconventional and could not shake off the suspicion that Handel was trying to ridicule him. In addition to all sorts of virtuosic pearls and moving psychograms, the magic opera Orlando captivateswith an ambiguity that knows how to draw a lot of comic potential from the tragic love madness.

Zoroastro mahnt den Krieger Orlando, seine Leidenschaften zu zügeln, und will ihn zurück zur Vernunft leiten, was sich als äußerst schwierige Angelegenheit erweist. Ein Gefühlscocktail aus Eifersucht und Hass, Misstrauen und Selbstüberschätzung lässt Orlando zu einem Schatten seiner selbst werden. Grund dafür ist seine unerwiderte Liebe zu Angelica, die mit Medoro liiert ist. Diesen wiederum begehrt Dorinda, deren Liebeskummer jedoch weniger pathologische Auswüchse annimmt. Orlando rast, tobt und wütet; und offenbart sich in seinen Gewaltfantasien als zutiefst unglücklicher Mensch, dem die Kontrolle über sich selbst abhandengekommen ist.

Georg Friedrich Händel fand in Ludovico Ariostos Orlando furioso einen erfolgversprechenden Stoff über die verschlungenen (Irr-)Wege der Leidenschaften. Der Wahnsinn des Titelhelden bot ihm die Möglichkeit, auch musikalisch »außerhalb der Form« zu stehen: Die innovative Partitur bringt das Schema der Opera seria gehörig aus dem Takt und bricht mit dem Erwartbaren. Wenn Orlando sich in die Unterwelt halluziniert und komplett den Bezug zur Realität verliert, nutzt Händel radikale, wahrlich »verrückte« Mittel. Sogar Senesino, der Star-Kastrat der Uraufführung, empfand die Partie als reichlich unkonventionell und konnte sich des Verdachts nicht erwehren, Händel versuche, ihn lächerlich zu machen. Neben allerhand virtuosen Perlen und bewegenden Psychogrammen besticht die Zauberoper Orlando mit einer Doppelbödigkeit, die aus dem tragischen Liebeswahn durchaus eine Menge komisches Potenzial zu schlagen weiß.
