Haydn’s tautly dramatic op 20 G minor quartet of 1770 opens full of striking elements: a lop-sided, four-plus-three-bar theme, viola doubling violin, frequent pauses, flits between major and minor, lyricism and scurrying. The Minuet’s cheerful trio and the radiant Poco adagio temper the anxiety, but the finale resumes the opening mood, fading out on a whisper. Composed in 1927, Bartók’s short third quartet has equally ear-grabbing textures and special colours. Cast in three seamlessly joined sections, an initial violin solo introduces its Prima Parte’s material, after which pizzicato heralds the folky, rhythmic Seconda parte, before solo cello launches the coda. Schubert’s epic G major Quartet was his last, written over ten days in 1826. After a multi-textured opening battle between darkness and light comes an equally emotionally charged slow movement. Momentary serenity comes with the Scherzo’s waltzing trio. Then while the racing, syncopation-rich finale reintroduces major-minor tension, it closes in major-keyed triumph.

Le quatuor en sol mineur op.20 de Haydn, tautologique et dramatique, datant de 1770, s’ouvre avec des éléments frappants: un thème asymétrique de quatre plus trois mesures, l’alto doublant le violon, des pauses fréquentes, des passages entre le majeur et le mineur, le lyrisme et l’agitation. Le trio joyeux du menuet et le Poco adagio tempèrent l’anxiété, mais le finale retourne à l’humeur du départ et finalement s’estompe sur un murmure. Composé en 1927, le court quatuor de Bartók présente également des textures accrocheuses et des couleurs spéciales. Structuré en trois parties bien intégrées, un solo initial de violon introduit la Prima parte, après quoi le pizzicato annonce la partie folklorique et rythmique de la Seconda parte avant que le violoncelle lance le Coda. Le quatuor épique en sol majeur de Schubert fut le dernier qu’il écrivit et fut composé en dix jours en 1826. Après une ouverture multiforme entre ombre et lumière vient un mouvement lent tout aussi chargé émotionnellement. Une sérénité momentanée servi avec le trio virevoltant du Scherzo. Le finale rapide et riche en syncope, réintroduit la tension majeure-mineure et termine en triomphe en tonalité majeure.
